Evening all,

I'm in the market for a 90 or 91 Coupe Quattro 20V (7A Engine), I understand these are fairly scarce as they were only produced for 3 years. Budget around £3k but will goto £4k for a minter. Want it as a base for a new project, plan to drop an S2 lump in at some point but would need it as a run-around for 6months first.

Any buying tips or things to look out for?

Regards
Matt

Why don't you just buy an S2?

Wheres the fun in that?

If you've seen my Saab you'll know I find building the car 1/2 the fun!

Add to that the cheapest S2 Coupe on the trader is £10k and with a budget of £7k I could build something substantialy more capable than a standard S2.

This might be a decent starting point though given that the engine will do a reliable 650bhp if you do enough to it.

Well yes I have seen your Saab, and I certainly appreciate the enjoyment that comes from building and modifying a car.

But you can pick up S2s, even the later type with the ABY engine and 6-speed box for a lot less than 10K. I looked at one for the Mrs for 5k and only rejected that because the suspension needed rebushing. I just think you might save yourself a lot of expense and bother getting an S2 than getting a 20v then dumping all the expensive bits.

Still, best of luck.

I know where your coming from but if I were to buy an S2 I'd end up changing or uprating at least the following

Brakes,
Suspension,
Wheels - to fit brakes in
Shell - Would have some minor strenghening
Interior - as this would be a less hardcore car than the Saab it'd probably be audio and leather.
Engine Management, injectors etc.
Turbo,
Intercooler,
More than likely a fair few drivetrain components.

You see whilst I could buy an S2 I'd end up taking it all apart anyway and dumping most of the bits you would pay extra for. A 20V Coupe Quattro would provide me with a shell, dashboard and a few other minor bits that I'd need for about £2000 - £3000 less than an S2, which equates to a 20V Turbo lump, management and some brakes.

Matt - ,you might want to consider doing the mods you intend to a 90 20valve saloon. It's a much better car than the coupe, far better handling, much more rigid body. And cost less to buy than a coupe.

Very true but a nice 6 point weld in cage should remove the shell flex with extreme prejudice

I'm probably going to run whatever Coupe I acquire as a daily driver for about a year whilst I deal with other upcoming projects - then prep it for hill climb and sprint work and go get me some trophies

Why is the 90 a better handler than the Coupe? Just curious.

My dad had an F reg 90 2.2E for 11 years and 175,000 torquey miles...

Coupe suffers rather badly from shell flex - due to the large hole in the back of it (or hatchback as its more commonly known )

Matt - you probably know, but S2forum.com is the place to go for info on these cars. A coupe for sale at the moment - www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7107

Worth posting question on site as to any issues in undergoing this sort of transplant...

Cheers
