What mpg do people genuinely get out of these engines in A3/A4 sized cars? Could i expect 30mpg on a fastish cross country commute?

I normally run diesels for the fuel economy because of the mileage i do - 25-30k.

However diesel is becoming more expensive in the UK so the fueling cost difference isn't so great and petrol cars are maybe a bit cheaper to buy to start with.

Thoughts anyone......would i regret the swap back to petrol?

I ran my brothers 2.8 quattro A4 for a week and it nearly broke me - 20mpg was not acceptable nor was the 100quid on fuel in a week!

Dad's saab 9-5 used to return 30mpg on a standard run or 36mpg if you drove it carefully other long distances. I think the most he managed out of it was 37.7mpg.

It was a Saab 9-5 2.3t Vector. (185bhp)

My 1.8T Skoda Octavia has auto transmission, and has been remapped to comfortably over 220 BHP. I also don't drive it with fuel economy in mind. Even so, it (just about) manages 30 MPG overall.

hummmmm.........

Assuming 30mpg for petrol and 40mpg for diesel it works out at about £640 more expensive on fuel for the petrol based on 26k

Its still quite a difference, nearly pays for insurance and tax...decisions decisions

If they realistically do 30+mpg i might be tempted for a change

Probably not much help but is a Jap car an option ?

I've got an old Primera GT that has never dropped below 34mpg but will do 40 on a quick motorway run. I love it to bits, handling is great, much much better than my A4.

I do agree with you on the A4 economy, i've got a company 3.0 quattro that averages 21mpg and I don't think is anywhere quick enough for the mpg.

I get similar figures to Mungo for my LCR, on my 10 minute drive to/from work I am lucky to get over 25mpg. Longer motorway runs and I can usually get around the 30mpg mark.

My 1.8T Octavia will do 32 on a clear cross town run with plenty of lights and other obstuctions.
Motorways are better, 34-35, as long as you stick around the 70 mark, drops to a 30 average if most of my journey is done at 90.
Once had 37 out of it though on a gentle 50-65mpy cruise through the B-Roads of East Anglia though, so it can be had.
Mine is bog standard BTW, just trying to put enough cash together to get re-mapped

My experience of Golf 1.8t vs Golf Tds is av of high 20s to 30 for the 1.8Ts & very high 40s for the Diesels, so depending on driving style an absolute minimum min of 10mpg better & normally nearer 15-18mpg.

Ifact for the diesels you have to abuse the hell out of em to geta worse avaerage than 40mpg, with 50mpg easily posible on a run.

Agreed Audi v6s are pant on the juice & just not quick enough (s4/RS4 excepetd nach!)

Are you guys giving DIS (computer) figures or real tank full to tank full figures?

My A6 1.8T does between 28 and 30mpg depending on how I've been driving it on mixed commuting and around town work. That's with 112k miles on the clock.

We had an A3 1.8T and that did between 33 and 35mpg on average.

My girlfriend now has a TT which the computer says does 30-32mpg. I haven't measured it, but I reckon it's overreading by around 10% like most Audi computers.

I've seen the DIS on my S3 once read 39mpg after my girlfriend drove a long motorway journey. I think this is pretty optimistic. I would say mid thirties on the motorway and mid twenties round town.

That's pretty much what our S3 gets - it's averaged 29mpg over the past two years, doing a mixture of pootling to the shops and the occasional long motorway trip (and the odd B road blast!).

Echo the above thoughts - DIS says around 30-32 (225 TT) but I reckon I'm getting around 380 miles out of the tank - 62 litres I think. Works out at around 27/28MPG.

I do quite a lot of drifting along the M25 etc to get it to that. You only see the numbers drop when you (allegedly) go into 3 figures or when sat in traffic.
