I'm looking for some info about buying an early Mk4 Golf GTi, it's the 1.8 non turbo model. If anyone has any advice, links etc. I'd be very grateful.

The car's not for me in case you're wondering, my only knowledge of this spec of GTi is that it's a bit on the slow side and the engine isn't the best.

Any help welcome all the same

I may be mistaken, but I thought the non turbo MK4's were 2.0 not that makes much difference!

Thanks edc, I'll give that a look.

Mustard, the very early Mk4 GTis were 1.8 and 1.8T models, I think the 2.0 came shortly afterwards.

Cheers,
Jamie

Slow, heavy & wallowy & a complete joke to have a GTi badge, my personal advice would be to not buy one.

Altho obviously people have many diferent reasons for buying cars so if driving enjoyment is not a factor to consider, go for it.

It's for a family member who's owned a series of GTis and fancies a Mk4, the particular example is an ultra-low mileage car at what seems like a good price.

Not my cup of tea - only the R32 of the Mk4s has any interest for me!

If said driver has had previous GTIs and fancies another similar driving experience then probably no the car to get. Although, you can tell this from a quick drive within about 30 seconds lol

Missus has the 2.0. Not THAT bad a car - not quick, wallows a lot etc but if you want a comfortable, classy, (fairly) reliable car then its a pretty good buy. Great for cruising at 70-80.

Only things to go wrong in 5 years are arguably niggles : seat cables (to flip them forwards) and the clips to hold the window panes into the motors.

Did suffer a big time oil leak once though and the brake cylinder cracked but that was strangely whilst it was at the dealers!

Thanks for all the advice, my dad ended up buying the car anyway

It's a nice enough car, only done 27K and he got it for a decent price. Best thing about it from my point of view is the interior - love the Mk4 interiors.
