Can anyone tell me when cam belt changes are required on Audi A4s?

Are there any important things to look out for when buying a earlier model?

1.8 non-turbo is 80,000 but i was recommended to do mine earlier (did it at 64k).

2.0 non-turbo on new shape A4 is 115,000 mile!

A belt's a belt. I think your are asking for trouble to leave it that many miles.

Big service at a dealer for a diesel is about £350 (includes belt and tensioner).

Mine was done at last service - 82k miles.

1.8T Quattro - its on AVS (Audi variable Service). Last service was 65k miles, and they made no mention of it then. Cost is £400 - take it to a local garage for about £120. Audi service is a rip off - I'm not going any more.

The Audi service literature in your handbook states 80k miles. Audi however have experienced premature failures and advise all customers to change at 60k miles. They are I belive reveiwing all handbooks to reflect this.

The belt change on my S4 is about £500 all in due to the front of the car having to come off to get to it.

People knock dealers sometimes, (me included) but certain things on audi's require special tools that some non franchised servicing agents don't have. on the more sophisticated audi engines a cam gear locking device is used which is essentially a jig built bracket that locks the bottom end and cam pulleys etc in the right place.

It is all to easy for a non franchised agent not to have this kit, cobble something together and get the cam timing 1 tooth out. the car still runs, but it ain't the same.
be careful

Neil.

I'm taking about brake fluid change £150 or £70 - Brake pad change £170 ot £50 etc etc.

At 50k, they told me the front pads needed changing, and really the discs as well. I was broke so decided to wait 'til the light came on.

At 67k service they said the rear pads needed changing, and really the discs as well. I asked how the fronts were. "Oh they're fine.....its just the rears"

The car is now at 87k, and the pad light came on this week, so I'm getting them changed at a local garage BECAUSE I DON'T TRUST AUDI.
