Noise when climate control/aircon is off (Audi A3)

Hi Guys, wondering if you can help.

I've had a Audi A3 SE 1.9tdi (2001) for about 6 months now. The best car I've owned, absolutely top car. However about a week ago I noticed a noise coming from the engine bay when the climate control/aircon is off. If you turn it on it goes aways after a few seconds. If the climate control/aircon was of it would go eventually within a minute. Now it stays on all the time until I switch the climate control/aircon on. Any ideas?

Is it serious, can I fix it myself ? (I hope so!).

had the same fault on my new Golf TDi after about 2 years.,
The disengage solenoid was stuffed.

Replaced under warrantly.
