Right guys I would love to own an Audi S3 2L Turbo 265bhp 2010/2011 model however although I can afford to insure it, thinking sensibly I'm also considering the Audi A3 2L TFSI quattro Sline 200 bhp 2010/2011 model.

I was just wondering what they were both like on fuel economy? Now I know you don't buy an S3 for mpg but for performance which is why I want it but realistically 200 bhp would be plenty if it was considerably cheap. Roughly how much does it cost per tank and how many miles do you get per full tank? They are both quote at similar MPG figures but I'm thinking if the A3 is going to be pretty similar in terms of running costs I would be better off going for the S3 as I'm someone who always wants the best

I have only considered the A3 since going in my friends. I can't make a decision until I've test drove both but as much as I want the fun of a high performance car, I do have to consider costs as sadly I'm not a millionare.

Mr wife drives a 2006 2.0 t quattro 200hp a3 and I find it very thirsty. 30 petrol is lucky to get a 100 miles.

I went from an Octavia vrs (2wd 200bhp) to a TTS (4wd 270bhp). Not much difference in economy really.

According to my geeky fuel app...

Average over 17k miles in the TT is 29.3mpg. Best of 37.3, worst of 19.5.

Budget for Shell V Power or similar.

I had a 2011 S3. Never saw over 30mpg out of it. My commute saw low to mid 20's and motorway driving high 20's. You could get 30 if you were doing a long run and set the cruise to 70 but I never did it and they are generally quite thirsty.

Her in doors has a 2010 S3, she gets 250 miles out of the 50 litre tank. I can nurse it to 35 mpg but it's not fun! I've got a 2.0 tfsi A5 with FWD and can do 450 miles on a 55 litre tank, if that's any help!

I've got an 06 2.0TFSI, and on motorway runs I get just over 30, and around town I see <25

Same engine in my GTI returns mid 20s in town and mid 30s motorway. Highest I've ever seen is 40 on a long on and boring motorway slog. Overall average from the last 1500 miles is 28.5, mostly town and fully enjoying the 200bhp driving

Its a great engine would highly recommend, definitely puts a smile on your face.

Not much help! - do you run the tank dry or fill up with 10 litre left? Makes a big difference to mpg (45 or 37).

I don't think you'll see much difference between them, they're very similar engines. My 2.0TFSI was pretty thirsty, I also never really saw above 30 mpg. I'd get the S3 if funds allow, you'll enjoy it more.

SEAT Leon 2.0 TFSI. I currently average around 26mpg, but do a lot of stop-start driving at the moment. On a decent run it will get around 35; for proper combined driving round about 30. Frugal they are not.

Agree with the above poster who said budget for super. I lose 4mpg running mine on standard 95 octane.

Driven with a light foot, my old S3 8P Sportback used to do about 500 km (300 miles) per tank on average; add 50 miles or so for motorway trips.

If you stay off boost it does quite well. That said, it is still an AWD car with a potent engine, so if MPG is very important, I'd just get the regular 2.0T. Any caning will result in considerably poorer mileage.

Big difference? Not really. To make it easy for you, if the car has done 440 miles and it has a 10 mile range left I call that 450 miles.

I have a 2011 S3. The OBC tells me I average high 20s per tank. I can get 30+ tootling along at 50 ish on my 18 mile commute. Usually fill up at 300 - 320 miles.

Use the performance, though, and this soon drops!

just got rid of an A3 2.0TFSi Quattro S-line, I got between 25-30mpg day to day with mid 30's on a steady run. It had quite possibly the worst ride of any car I have driven

See my long-term "Garage" entries.

29mpg for my 2.0T quattro, 26mpg for my 8P S3 and - interestingly - 27mpg for my current Golf Mk5 R32.

So you believe the electronic readout - I didn't realise that anyone did that. In France, on a public holiday with most petrol stations closed, I drove 104 miles after the readout in my car stated 60 miles range and I still couldn't fill the tank!

Wow - some big variances here. FWIW my 06 A4 2.0TFSI (220 hp) presumably heavier than an A3 returns 40mpg or more on a motorway run, with 30 around town - averaging 35 - which in my book is pretty good for a tuned 2.0T. It is better on 98 octane marginally and I'm not an eco driver by any stretch.

My friends newer S3 (his third) rarely gets 30 even on a run - so although more powerful than a 2.0TFSi theres is a big void to consider against extra performance after the novelty has worn off.

By comparison my A6 3.0 TDi Q4 is far worse best 37mpg on a long run and high 20's around town - i guess the weight and cylinder count plays a factor here and the petrol is a much better drive.

My wife had a 2.0T quattro and I have a TTS (same engine in as the S3). Not that much difference in fuel economy to be honest although mine gets super unleaded and hers got normal - not sure how much difference that made.

Both average around 30. Mid 30s if tootling around on the motorway, high 20s if going slightly over the limit and low 20s if you're having a heavy foot day.

Quattro plays a part - it's a fair power drain which reduces efficiency a bit, especially while cruising at speed.

Not a particularly efficient engine, doesn't sound great either. However I've found it very usable, with low down torque and good mid-range. It responds very well to a performance software too.
