How long is it OK to wait for a new car?
Discussion
I ordered my Octavia vRS on the 4th of September and was told to expect delivery in 8-10 weeks. I went into the dealer as communication hasn't been the best to be told the the build date has been bouncing around and it is currently settled on the 2nd week of December and depending on delivery scheduled I should expect delivery the 2nd week of January. Although, the date is not 'locked in' and could change again.
The point of my post, would I be right to expect some sort of extra discount or good will gesture on the car as I have to spend more money on my current car to make sure it soldiers on until mid January or should I just chalk this up to experience?
Any sensible suggestions welcome

I had a wait of 4 months for my current Rocco and 7 months for my MK5 R32 before it. Dadly it's just the way it is with VAG but it does no harm to try and negotiate something though.
Also, quoted leadtimes are not from when you place the order but from when the factory avvept the order. With some models dealers only get so many build slots a month based on their overall sales performance.

king Morgan is it ? Have they not heard of just in time manufacture ?
Why when you purchased it, didn't you make it a condition of sale that it was delivered within 10 weeks? With say free loan of a curtesy car until it was delivered ? When they refuse go elsewhere.
I can't believe it. Really I can't.

I didn't make it a condition as it's my first new car and I believed the dealer when he said 10 weeks. My mistake.
My current 150k mk5 Golf needs tyres and the clutch/flywheel are making some very interesting noises.
We have gone from 2 cars, sold our other car to cover the deposit then the dealer was gonna take this one off our hands when the new one turns up.
Fingers crossed it will last another 2 months but if it does let go im stuffed.
I'll go back in and ask, the reason I choose a new car is so I dont have these worries.
Although, a 500 quid scooby could be good fun it the golf does go bang.

Explain your dilema and ask (due to the delay) if they will take your Golf early and loan you a courtesy car.
They may or may not be cooperative, but they will want good customer satisfaction scores on the inevitable survey and may propose a compromise. Remember if you don't ask you won't get, it won't be the 1st time they have had this issue.
If VAG have done well enough to hit annual (UK) targets, they often delay cars until the new year. No regard for the customer, finance offers due to expire at year end, dealer or salesman who may or may not have hit targets and need the extra couple of units.
(I'm so pleased I no longer work for a VAG dealer)

Exactly.

It's a Skoda FFS.
I'd tell 'em to poke it and buy something else.
The only new car we ordered (privately) was our TT back in 2002. We ordered it in September 2001, but it took so long to arrive that the standard spec changed in the meantime. We were a bit naiive and didn't really push it, especially as we'd ordered it from a German dealer and didn't really know where we stood.
On the flipside, the last company car we had before opting out and going private was a Golf GTi when the MKIV first launched. At that time VW had a 1.8 non-turbo and a 1.8 turbo. We ordered the turbo version and they put the order in as a non-turbo. In that instance, they let us keep the 'wrong' car for 6 months as it was their mistake. In the meantime, they put the right order through and we eventually got our GTi T - but almost a year after ordering.

Waited 8 months for my Up! GTi The VW tracking app and www.vw.co.uk order tracking are hopelessly late and/or wrong.
there are people who ordered on day 1, and waited 9 months. Later orders sometimes got delivered earlier.
2000miles in, it's an absolute cracker !
10 months for my Golf GTE (ordered Nov 17, arrived Sept 18) which was double the time I was told it would take when I ordered (paperwork said March).
and yeah, the tracker didn't work well e.g. it told me the car had arrived at the port, then a week later it was back in the factory. I think the WLTP backlog was playing havoc. At least that's what I was told by my dealer who seemed just as frustrated as I was.
To be fair, VW looked after me well. They gave me a Golf GTD mobex in May so I had free motoring for 4 months (including their insurance) which took the sting out of the delay.
