According to The Sydney Morning Herald's Joshua Dowling, Audi's TT Roadster has won the inaugural Australian Gay Car Of The Year award.

The gong was announced during Melbourne's Gayaz Expo in Melbourne last month, where 10 contenders were displayed during the event's three days. The Expo attracted 13,000 people, about 10 per cent of which voted in what is the only Australian Car of The Year Award where the public can participate.

Finalists included the second place-getting Mazda's RX-8, Audi's Allroad, the Audi A4 cabriolet, the Mazda3 SP23, Mitsubishi's Outlander (Airtrek in NZ), the Ford Territory, Ford's Fiesta, the Holden Monaro CV8 and Holden's Astra convertible.

"The votes weren't just based on image," says David McCarthy, organiser and founder of the award. "Style was pretty important but that wasn't the only criteria that people used to make their decision.

"We found that the gay public has a good depth of knowledge of the vehicles and are aware of issues such as cost-of-ownership and resale value. They take their buying decisions very seriously and are also interested in the safety and quality of the cars."

Audi spokeswoman Anna Burgdorf says: "It is always an honour to receive an award and especially a people's choice award. The gay community tends to be early adopters of fashion, technology and trends, so it's certainly a big compliment."
