Hi, a friend of mine from work has a P reg A4 1.8T Sport and has been having problems with the ignition lock and the various functions that are triggered when you turn the key.
Started with the wipers and indicators not working all the time and now the immobiliser flashes on intermittently.
His local garage reckoned it was the ignition lock but couldn't help any further. Audi specialist garage is next but though someone here migh tbe able to advise as well?

Cheers
David

It is the ignition back cap on the rear of the ignition key switch. This is a very common audi problem and causes problems to all audi's eventually. the spring load mechanism weakens and doesn't allow the switch to kick back fully after cranking.

On my old A4 quattro the problem actually caused the starter motor not to disengage after the engine fired. This lunched the starter motor. a few days earlier all sorts of stuff was happening to the ignition / warning lights etc etc.

Neil,

Thanks for that, do you know if there is a fix for it that can be done by hte home mechanic without paying uber-money for a new ignition switch/cap?

Sounds like some wd40 might help or a new spring?

fix it yourself. A new ignition back cap is about £40 from audi. other than that a non franchised garage will charge aroung £80 for doing it for you.

My mother has a T reg A3 1.6 which has an intermittent problem with the ignition & immobilier.

About once a week the starter motor does not engage. So get out the car, lock up, unlock and try again. If the same thing happens leave for 20 minutes and try again... and again. Longest wait has so far been 40 minutes.

Audi dealership have tried twice to fix this but are unable to find a solution. I was wondering if it could be the same problem / solution as described above and if not, if anyone had any ideas.

If the starter doesn't engage then it coul be the solenoid if it doesn't turn the it might be the brushes.
