Never done it but mates have, not rocket science but there are a few things you should do, to do the job properly.

Like either use the rare as rocking horse poo Scirocco right hand side inlet manifold & injection/airbox or use the far more widely available normal KR 16v stuff (left hand injection) and locate it on the left- not the best idea to bend all the pipes over the engine & relocate the fuel filter to the bulkhead- by the headlight is just asking for a fire in a small crash.

Anyway best place to ask, as it been asked quite a few times before is over on the club GTi forum

oh and a link you might find useful-

Ive done it. My car has had both 16v conversions

It was first done with a MkII 1.8 16v engine and now has a 2.0 16v Mk3 Golf Gti engine in. Which are you thinking of putting in?

Any problems, I will probably know of them

Well, it depends. I had a Mk2 Rod driven box with short linkages put in. Now I have the Mk3 Cable change box but from what I remember about my old bax... it was a Mk2 Rod box nad it went straight in.... I think!!

If it is a problem, I can look through my history and see how we did it first time round.

I've helped a friend with a mk1 16v turbo conversion and have another friend with one of the quickest stock valvers in the country (pvw hall of fame). I don't think the engine will drop in easily in your case because the engine mounts are different on the 1100 if I remember correctly. The brakes will most definitely need fettling with. At the very least a 16v mk2 master cylinder upgrade with decent discs and pads. The rear disc conversion is not necessary, at the most fit mk3 drums and shoes which provide a little more brake power.
