High mileage 3.0tdi engines
Discussion
Currently my audi 3.0tdi has done 134k and I do about 45-50k a year so wondering if there are any 200+k owners on here?
Trying to decide whether to change it or just run it until dies
Only one issue which I can ignore on the car at the moment, otherwise seems solid and no reason to believe it wont go on for a lot longer.

Normal on that sort of mileage, can be fixed for ~£250 per side (if it needs both) rather than replaced.
Was offered a 311k mile 2.7 quattro tip a couple of weeks ago and have customers nearing 200.
Early cars can suffer chain tensioner rattle (as per S4, change the bloody oil more often) and injector failure but with regular oil they're good for moon miles.

No engine light and vag com shows no issues but have had it suggested perhaps the throttle pedal is worn not showing low opening points.
Automatic box, with a noticeable delay between pressing pedal and going? They all do that sir. Put it into sport and it goes away, which suggests it's deliberate within the gearbox\engine maps.

Recently purchased an 04 A8 3.0 tdi that has a small rattle on cold start up, could this be this issue? (It's just about to turn 100k and has previously been on long life servicing regime)If so, is it easy to remedy?

Fault you describe in earlier post could be clutch pedal switch.
Does your cruise control work?
Hi Dr G,Does your cruise control work?
When I bought the car the cruise didnt work. I replaced the switch with a nongenuine one and cruise worked but no change to throttle, I had a genuine one fitted and it possibly improved a tiny bit. I went through the throttle learn sequence and again possibly slightly better. But its still there meaning no full throttle in 1st and 2nd.
It idles lumpy occasionally, and after a while of gentle driving it likes a boot to empty out and nice big cloud of diesel smoke but then runs perfect again.

It's funny when you start thinking about selling because of what MIGHT go wrong.
Two cars ago, we had a 2.5 V6 TDi A4. Bought it with 60,000 miles on and ran it up to 120,000 - with no problems other than regular servicing items and the armrest lid - which I fixed myself. But we started thinking about how much it might cost to keep on the road and decided to sell and get something newer.
Bought a 2-year old BMW 530d with 32,000 miles on the clock and it was an absolute lemon. Unfortunately, we couldn't sell as we'd have lost too much on it, so ran it for five years until it was paid off. In hindsight, getting rid early might have cost us money, but so too did keeping it. Everything that could go wrong did - and it cost us thousands to put right.
Sometimes, it's better the devil you know.

No.If so, is it easy to remedy?
If it's slight don't worry about it and do your oil annually/10k. A lot of the S4 boys swear by changing to a slightly heavier engine oil.

Cheers, yes, it is only when it's been sitting a wee while you get a minor rattle for about 1.5 seconds. Not there when running. If it's slight don't worry about it and do your oil annually/10k. A lot of the S4 boys swear by changing to a slightly heavier engine oil.
Changed the oil again yesterday after 9k miles and always do this as a minimum.
