Help appreciated here on a price for a new cambelt for a VW Passat TDi 110.

I've been quoted around £200 +VAT fitted, seems rather expensive to me for a cambelt at an independent garage.

Any ideas on the average price?

Thanks.

I've just had mine changed on the Bora.

Total bill for the 60K service including cambelt, was £300 inc vat. That was at an independent garage - main stealers charge nearer the £400 mark.

Thanks folks.

I called the VW agent too and they wanted £290 + VAT for just changing the belt

I'll shop around!

UPDATE:

I was reffered by a colleague to a VW mechanic who will fit one privately for £130 including supply of the belt.

Fitting time is approx. 3hrs and he'll do it on my drive or in my garage if it's raining.

I don't know about the other lesser Audi engines but on the i-5 changing the cambelt is a pretty involved exercise, the tensioner and waterpump must always be replced at the same time and the water pump pulley HAS to come off and MUST be done up to 350/400 NM (or ft/lbs can't remember which right now)

Did two of them last weekend. '92 8v GTi Golf and a '91 1600 Scirocco. Golf was mine, Sciroc was a friends.

Golf took about 40 minutes 'cos we were working out how to do it. Sciroc was 20 minutes from getting the jack under there to starting her up with the job done. Oh, and the Golf has power steering, which makes the job harder (have to get another belt off, and the adjuster had seized.)

Belt was about £5, idler about £10 in both cases, from GSF.
