Well after some time we finally sorted out getting our new(ish) car :- 2002 A6 Avant 2.5 TDI Quattro Sport.

Looks lovely and travels wonderfully - feels much tighter than my previous 1998 A6 2.4 saloon.

Couple of questions though :-

1) Slight 'rumble' from front left side (I think) between 45-70mph - nothing loud just enough to notice - any thoughts?

2) 1st gear seems VERY low geared (6 spped box) to the point of hardly being worth while

3) The clutch is very low and quite sharp - at least in comparision to the previous one and our other 2 cars (A3 1.8T, TVR Chimaera). I asked the dealer and they checked but said its a hydraulic clutch and is how it should be

Any comments?

Rubmle, wheel bearing? Worn diff at worst, deformed tyre?

Short 1st gear is probably to help with towing, as that's a fairly hefty reason for getting a tdi quattro.

I have an A4 TDi and 1st is ludicrously low, as soon as you are moving you need to change up.

Nah, towing interesting heavy things like racing cars and rocket launchers.

Your experience is quite opposed to mine! I had a 98 petrol V6 (although 2.8 Quattro), then drove a 2002 2.5 TDi Quattro and didn't like it as much. At all.

Weird

Sounds like the usual VW group on-off quality!

I had creaky suspension if you bounced the car up and down but can't remember what I did about it.

creaky suspension was caused by the fit of the rubber bushes in the alloy suspension uprights. It is a well known fault.
Our A4 2.5 tdi is only 110k new!! on the clock.Doesn't burn any oil and although not as economical as the 4 cyl variety, with a re-map goes like stink.Am dreading the bill for the cambelt next year.
