I've had the car for a couple of weeks now - could not be happier with it - specification includes

Recaro Seats
Sat Nav Plus with TV
Rear electric window blind
Sunroof with solar panel
Factory Hands-free telephone kit
Rear Parking Sensors
Xenon Headlights
Steering wheel gearchange

Never considered buying an Audi before, but now I'm a convert!

Very nice - can only imagine how it feels after driving the A8 version while the Mrs was an ever so brief oownerlast year. Cant see a single A6 4.2 on Autotrader. Are they hard to get hold of or what?

Tuxman,

have you got any more info on the boot spoiler? Got my A6 2.7T Quattro Sport 6 weeks ago, fully loaded on a 2000 X plate - terribly impressed! But I do feel that the boot is crying out for a lip! any info/prices etc would be appraciated.

There seem to be a lot of A6 4.2s in that colour scheme with all the options (Recaros being a particularly obscure thing for a private buyer to spec). I say a lot - there aren't ever many of them around, but when I was looking I saw an oddly large proportion in that spec.

Anyhow, I ended up getting an S6 because I happened to spot one at the right price - mightily similar and I'm equally impressed.

The VAST majority of 4.2 quat sports went to Audi UK because buyers generally went up to the S6.

They were sold in tiny numbers to private buyers so the cars you see are usually ex dealer demo or ex Audi UK cars.

I'd like to fit a boot spoiler also - have seen a few on the roads - if you can post a picture tuxman, that'd be great - unfortunately that's only the start of the wish list (RS6 alloys, Porsche 4 pot brakes, Eisenmann exhaust etc......)

The car only has had one registered keeper - private buyer who seems to have specified it 'money no object' Because its a 1999 and I don't think that S6 came out till possibly 18 months later, this car was quite a lot cheaper than any S6s that I saw. There only ever seem to be maybe 15-20 A6 4.2s for sale in the UK at any one time, and they don't seem to shift that quickly - suppose most people don't even give them a second thought as they search for a 5 series.

One thing I have found is that parts are difficult to obtain from Audi (compared to BMW where getting anything for my 1989 E30 is normally next day delivery) Tried to buy a touch-up pen to find they are discontinued, then tried to buy a rear parcel shelf, which has been on back order for 3 weeks with no delivery date yet - is this usual for Audi main dealers?

Still, after a month, smitten with the car - even the fuel economy is good (just under 30mpg on a recent 300 mile run)

I just gave my S6 back to the dealer. Following delivery it had an oil leak which was diagnosed as a faultly seal. New seal is fitted, leak persists and it sturns out original 4wd shaft is worn as well. This then means a new back end gearbox piece with shaft and seal.

Thats fine, only its a part that doesnt exist in the UK and Audi Germany dont have any either.....its on an indeterminate back order.

Swapped it for another car. Its performance was good but in truth it struggled to better 21mpg, even on a decent run and driving like a granny at 70mph.

Ah, the dreaded NLA (no longer available) list. usually indicates there's a big pile of them in some forgotten corner of a big audi warehouse in deepest germany.

EDIT: this lot www.speed-autoteile.com/ in germany are allegedly good at finding obscure parts of rare audis.

Hi,

I am looking to get hold of either an Audi A6 2.7 Bi turbo or an Audi A6 4.2 Quattro. I am looking with a budget of £5750 I havve seen a couple of 4.2s in that league but i keep missing the opportunity to go have a look. If anyone knows anywhere else other than auto trader and piston heads to find one for a good price. Id be extremely happy and greatful.

I am preferably looking for the 4.2 v8 any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the cash waiting.

Cheers.
