Hi guys,

Sorry to drop in but I have a query on behalf of my girlfriends parents who have a problem with their Golf (2000 X-reg, 1.6 petrol, manual, 44000 miles).

On a recent trip there was a mechanical noise emanating from the gearbox, so girlfriend's father managed to drive it gently to the nearby VW garage. It turns out that a rivet has sheared on the flywheel and gone through the gearbox housing, causing all fluid to drain out of the gearbox, teeth damage and the need for a replacement 'box.

They are currently being forced to pay for all of this as "It's not a manufacturing fault", although one of the mechanics admitted that this should never happen. VW are not interested in paying for any of the work as they haven't been loyal enough customers due to the last two services not being at VW franchised dealers.

Is this issue at all common or is this a one off? Do you think they have any recourse to VW for any of the parts given the problem they have experienced, and finally, I thought it was now illegal for garages to take issue with servicing being done outside of main dealers.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Don't know about you problem but the servicing out of network is a different matter. You can have your car serviced outside of the dealer network and maintain the warranty as along as you stick to the service schedule and use genuine OEM parts. There might be a few more riders but you can probably find them on the DTI site by searching for block exemption.
