Please help me in order to preserve my sanity...

The Audi 3.0 tdi motor as fitted to the A5 uses cam timing chains not timing belts doesnt it???

I cant see any evidence of cam belts from looking at the motor and the Audi manual on the 3.0tdi motor (downloaded from their erwin website) also goes into great detail about timing chains as well.

This being the case, why would my dealer want to charge me £443.32 to change the timing belt which they say is due every 5 years or 75000 miles (i think it was)????

Chain, apparently it`s quite common for vw and Audi dealers to send out standardised letters to customers regarding the timing belt change even when the car in question doesn`t have a timing belt.

The worrying thing was that it had just finished having one of those free vehicle health checks, so they had actually had the car in the workshop.....

Indeed, I received one telling me the cambelt should be changed in my A3 (3.2 chain driven cams), funny thing is a year or so later the camchain failed and needed changing... scratchchin

I've seen two chain failures on 3.0 TDIs, both very early cars (a 54 and an 05) both with big miles and so-so service history. Generally speaking it's not an issue.

Is that basically the same engine as the 3.0 in the A5 model, or is it completely different?

Numerous updates since but yes, it is fundamentally the same engine.

Good to know the engine has been around for a while and has the teething probs ironed out. I donwloaded the engine manual from Erwin and there are an awful lot of chains in the front of this engine. The only toothed belt I could see was the one that drives the high pressure fuel pump and this is in turn driven from one of the cams. Safe to say its cam chains and not cam belt then biggrin

Scary to think the dealer is supposed to know what they are looking at - especially when the car was parked in their inspection bay in front of them with the bonnet up....muppets.

Cheers to all for the replies.

Good afternoon Guru's. I am new this posting stuff, but I have an 08 audi A5 coupe 3.0 TDI before that I had the A6 Allroad on 07 plate.
I knew that the allroad had a timing chain and thought that would be the same for the A5, only today just found out that my 08 engine uses a belt. I took the plastic casing off the top front of the car I could see the belt and the cam, on my car the belt is very loose and that worries me a lot so that's a call out to rac to get the car back home and see if I can tackle the problem myself if not local garage. It's not a big belt but it goes around the cam

Update. Just spoke to Audi dealer the belt I mentioned in my post goes across the cam but the other part is the fuel pump.
No serious damages if this is to snap or come loose.

The timing chains are on the back of the engine, there's 3.

It's usually the tensioners that go before the chains.
