Anyone got one? (V8)

First baby has arrived so I`m after a family wagon with grunt, thats not going to bore me rigid...

I`d be keen to find out the why`s and whynots, driving experiences, and all the usual.

Can anyone help?

For the price of an S4 V8 you can get a used RS4.

Worth thinking about.

interesting - is there that much difference in grunt though?

I remember reading a couple of reviews when the S4 came out and they seemed to be pretty positive (although not an M3 beater).

From www.rs246.com

Audi RS4
2.7 V6 30v biturbo - 380bhp
Bhp @ rpm: 380 @ 6100
Nm @ rpm: 440 @ 2500
Unladen weight (kg): 1620
0-100 kmph (s): 4.90
0-200 kmph (s): 17.00
Top speed (mph/kmph): 155/250 Limited

Audi S4
4.2 V8 40v Naturally Aspirated - 344bhp
Bhp @ rpm: 344 @ 7000
Nm @ rpm: 420 @ 3500
Unladen weight (kg): 1660/1720
0-100 kmph (s): 5.6/5.8
Topspeed (mph/kmph): 155/250 (Limited)

The S4 V8 is newer, of course, but the RS4 is more iconic and also has more tuning potential.

Depends what you want. I've had the V6 S4 and currently have a V8 version; also have young ones!

New S4 vs old RS4. I look at it from a safety angle. The S4 is a newer design, has curtain airbags (few RS4's do) and the option of rear side airbags. It also has standard fit ISOFIX points in the back and you can fit them in the front passenger seat as an option. Audi do an excellent forward facing ISOFIX seat (made by Britax Romer) for ~9 mth+ olds and Britax are just launching a rear facing ISOFIX seat for little babies. BTW V8 S4 drives wonderfully with the performance increasingly materially after a few k miles.

I've never driven an RS4 but its bound to depreciate less than a V8 S4, however, they are now getting on a bit now. Have you thought about a used RS6 instead? Not much more than a well spec'd new S4 these days.

PS I've got an order in for a new shape Boxster S. Perhaps you can advise whether its worth going for?

Cheers andrew - I guess the answer is to go and have a drive!. My only concerns are the infamous woolly audi steering and choppy ride - but journo`s often overstate these kind of things so I`ll enter with an open mind...

RS6 is tempting but I`m not sure I can convince myself to have that much money in an everyday shopping wagon!

I would heartily recommend a Boxster S - obviously no-one`s driven the new one yet but if it improves on the current car then it will be a lovely thing. They`re very much like a grown up elise in character -with more comfort, reliability and grunt (and cylinders!). Never listen to a TVR owner because they don`t understand silly words like balance, composure and steering feel...

The steering on the V8 S4 can weight up in a pecular way mid corner (needing a lot more lock all of a sudden) but it is always controllable and I prefer steering which is too heavy rather than too light (like my old 3200GT Maser).

The suspension can be a bit firm but as mine was delivered with the rear transit cones in place it now seems ok!

The V8 S4 can carry materially more speed into corners than the V6 S4. If you get the latter you would probably want to firm the suspension up a bit.

Thanks for the views on the Boxster S - I may pass on my order as the new one is probably no faster than the old one. As I have got one of the first cars I'm just deciding whether to take it anyway for a few months or give the order back. Any views?

Andrew,

You might as well give it a go for a little while - if you`ve got an early slot you should be able to get all your money back for at least a few months. I gather the waiting list is about 18 months at the mo`.

I doubt it will be any quicker in real terms than the current car - I`m just waiting for someone in Stuttgart to have the balls to give us a lighter, 300bhp number!

Thanks - the market for off loading 'in demand' cars after a few months is not what it was but hopefully if I only put the essential options on (c£3k/4k), I will not lose too much.

Trouble is with these cars if you wait to drive them before committing to your order then you get bounced down the queue too much!
