S8 I do see the appeal, but S4 2.7T no question. (unless you said RS2 as well...)

I was driving an S4 just yesterday, big turbos, Porsche big reds, H&R coilovers, milltek system, RS4 style 18's, 400+bhp & huuuuge torque & goes like a b*stard = lovely & indeed jubbly, what more do you want for a sub £15k car that will give a (standard) RS4 a spanking & even a new 996Turby will not get away from.

Ok its still a bit bloated & a tad removed from the action, but hey its an Audi they are all like that now!

Do a search for S4, weve discused 'em on her a few times.

Sub £15K for the whole AMD nine yards?

Where is this fictional place Tarmaccasan?

I know S4's well and S8's for that matter, have had a few of both.

Just wondering, what peoples opinions are you see...

For performance and fun - S4

Not into larger performance cars.

For continental touring - S8

Pure luxury and excellent Autobahn cruiser.

If I had both in the garage, the S4 would get much more use!

It may well spank a 911 but how long do these things last in that state of tune ?

S4 .... because you can get an Avant, and you know you just have to have a fast Audi estate.

You never know when you might need those labrador sedatives...

I'd imagine they hold out very well if the 1.8Ts with 300-400bhp are anything to go by.

Just private sale, as im sure you know modded cars= worth little more & often less than a standard car & much narrower market to sell into, despite the fact that like many quite modified cars the mods on this particular car cost more than the current asking price.

Standard high miles S4s do creep on the market for sub £10k, but youve got to be a bit wary of the turbos unless they have been replaced.

Depends exactly whats been done & of course how you drive it, in this particular case its not really very highly tuned & this one has the benifit of a consdierably strengthened bottom end, as does an RS4, it wasnt cheap to do but seems worthwhile for longevity- its already done 120k & seems like new, big turbos have done 50k & no freeplay in impellor housings when checked.

Regular maintenance & proper turbo cool up & down routine (Turbos are an S4 weakpoint) the engine should be fine IMHO for 200k & the turbos for 100k, drive it flat out everywhere & track day it to death & ignore regular maintenance it could be shagged a lot lot sooner- rather obiously, but then the same applies to a porker.

Turbos are indeed a weak point it seems with most expiring between 60K and 100K depending on use and at main stealer rates between £3K and £4K to replace, not sure on the K04 upgrade price though.

The other downside to both, especially the 4 is insurance.

Both significantly more to insure than a 965T2...

If you are going down the replacing turbos route coz originals are shagged, its IMHO well worth going the K04 route, yes I think its a bit more ££ (not got figs to hand- but depends wher you get 'em from anyway) but not a daft amount more, tho re-mapping to suit will add a few squid & you really got to fit the big milltek down pipes & system to take advangage of them & it all adds up.

Suprised S4 ins is more than 965, I was v serious over a RHD RS2 at the right price a little ago, ins was less than the pimpmobile bimmer, & similar to normal M3 & bit more than 968CS, but still more than a tad painful.

In the end walked from the RS2 for reasons of it more than potentially ending up costing me big £ in a few areas- the cheap ones are cheap for a reason!

Why not split the difference and get an S6?

Same platform as the S4 but (IMO) better handling, same engine as the S8 (detuned to a mere 340bhp). You can even get an Avant version, not that it's necessary.

Oh, and the S6 is a proper S-car; it came as standard with the aluminium mirrors, flared arches, electric Recaros etc (like the S3 does). Most S4s don't come with the ally mirrors and Recaros, and none have a different body shape to ordinary A4s.

Not a turbo tech freak but a lot of the 1.8T based cars are going for IHI roller bearing type turbos, which give more power at the same boost levels and cost similar money. Seems to be a lot of interest in GT28RS too

Just moved back to Audi after my Tuscan.

I have purchased a one owner 1998 S4 Avant, 69k miles, FSH and it runs like a dream. I had the 320hp upgrade on Friday and it really does drive very well.

The suspension & brakes could do with attention but its not urgent. The cars not too big for around London and the wife can drive it without banging into every curb and parked car - which I think she would struggle with in the A8.

Given this was a £11k I am laughing all the way to the bank!!!

The Audi's S4's seem to depreciate harder than the S3's or S8's and present excellent value for money (IMHO) You would have to pay £10k more for an M5 or the same money for a LHD car. Even if the turbos do go I'm still up £5k

Insurance was £850 full comp with full NCB and SP30 & 5 points in central london

IMHO the S4 is a winner all round
