Of the whole selection now available which is the best?
I guess our selection is from

Audi A3/A2?
VW Golf/Polo/Lupo
Seat Ibiza/small thing
Skoda Fabia?

I have only driven the Golf which although good seems too lardy for real fun.

A3 (for retaining value and prestige) New model handles well but old one (IMO) a more practical car.
A2 too small an engine and looks ugly.
Golf - not quite as nice as A3. Not sure about the new one, Is this what you've driven?
Polo - Light version of Golf
Lugo - Small with small engine.
Seat - Build, although not bad, not as good as the rest here.
Fabia - a cheap A3. Nothing wrong with that though.
Octavia - Decent size, well built but would you tell people you drive a Skoda?

Personally I'd go for the A3 (got one), otherwise it's a tough choice between the new Seat Cupra or one of the Skoda's.

You're comparing some odd VAG cars there: Fabia vs A3?

What about the Ibiza FR, if Evo's initial report is anything to go by?

Ibiza FR - Diesel?

As per original question - Best value . . . Fabia is a damn good value car with same TDi engine as A3.

I don't dispute the value proposition but the Fabia is a car size smaller than the A3, so maybe a more 'direct' comparison would be Leon/Golf or an Octavia hatch?

They also do a 100PD engine in the Ibiza, I don't know what other cars it comes in (Polo?) but I've heard little about it.

I have a 1999 Passat TDi chipped to 145bhp and very nice it is too!

Very quick yet still very economical, very comfortable too although mine rides on 18" Audi RS4 alloys (same as sportier models of Audi TT) and is a little more bumpy than standard but nothing bad when compared with the majority of other cars.

Fully galvanised, nice modern (current) shape and is also very similar in body shpae as the latest Audi models. Lovely inside and very robust cars that have very few problems.

One common problem is with the glovebox lid lock failing but that's the only problem I've had in 12 months with this car. Superb quality all round, just like owning an upmarket Audi at a fraction of the initial cost if you are buying a used one.

Seat Leon TDi Cupra (150bhp) .. You can get nearly 200bhp by just changing the ECU chip (Revotecnik)

I should know as I am going to get it

I agree about the size thing, I just commented on the original cars mentioned.
Although the Fabia is based on the Polo floorpan I have always seen it as a bigger car. It just looks bigger than the Polo, yet smaller than the A3?

I don't know about what engines are fitted as they seem to fit both the 100PD and the 1.9TDi in many of the smaller cars.

Sorry, looks like the Fabia vRS is the best small(ish) VAG diesel.
That's if we agree with Top Gear?

If price is a major factor I'd agree, but the new Ibiza Cupra with a 160 diesel, Brembo brakes and more aggressive hothatch styling than the Fabia vRS might be on somebody else's list.

NEVER!
Next week they'll be contradicting themselves and claiming all Diesels are slower than any petrol car.
