Hi guys and girls,

I've just bought an old Scirocco to use for commuting/dross work, am I right in assuming that mine - an '87 Scala 1.8 carb runs on leaded juice?

If so does anyone have any recomendations for a lead replacement additive - I've heard Castrol Valvemaster is good, anyone able to speak from experience on this?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

nope, you can use unleaded, if IIRC correctly though timing may need to be adjusted (but I very much suspect that the previous owner will have had this done) , there should be a label on the fuel filler cap with more info.

NO addertives required, I had a 84 Injection 1.8 that was set up to run on 95ron and had no problems whatsoever in over 70k miles (had 112k on it when I sold it)

Excellent, it currently has a tank of straight unleaded in there at the moment and is running very well, I can check/tweak the timing with the aid of the Haynes manual which is on its way to me.

Just wanted to here that I won't damage the engine by using unleaded so thanks!

UL is fine, i've run 2 scirocs - a 1.6GT and a 1.8 scala, both earlier than yours.
optimax or SUL is better - engine is happier all round as VW specify higher octane tha regular UL sold in this country, but 95RON won't damage it.
