Clutch Play

I took my good lady's S4 out for a blast the other day and noticed that it was very difficult to change gear smoothly due to a huge amount of play on the clutch pedal? Is this normal?? Also with the ESP off she just seems to over rev?? I am sure that this isn't right? Any comments...
