Sorry to ask some simple questions but I am after some advice. My sister in law is after a golf V5 (sorry to say until today I have never heard of one). She wants to spend between £10k and 11K on one. Not worried about age but she is after a reliable one. Can anyone on here offer me advice on how to help her? Alas apart from the obvious things is there anything I should look out for when looking at some examples in the flesh? Also any dealers or places to buy that anyone recommends?

Thanks for anyone's help in advance.

regards

Simon

My parents have a golf V5. The only problem they've had has been with the coil pack which can give up and is a recognised fault.

Other than that my only other bit of advice would be to try and go for the later 170bhp verion with the red V rather than the earlier 150bhp model with the silver V.

Agree go for later one if budget allows, the extra power on later model comes from a freeer breathing multivalve head.

Worth a look at a 1.8T GTi as well, ok not the character of the 5 but 150bhp as stock, 200+bhp (how much depends on exact yr & model) & huge midrange torque when chipped & much more pos with a few simple mods, far more GTiT's about & easier to sell on.

2.0 shouldnt even be called a gti its only got 115 bhp ffs. 1.8t and V5 have similar performance but very different characteristics. I would advise he drives them to see which one suits him.

I have owned a 1.8t Golf and a V5, the 1.8 t is much more agressive, the v5 has such a smooth delivery and perfect for towing which is the reason I wanted it. I would say thought that when you come to sell it the 1.8t will allways out sell the v5 and hold its money better, I would recommend a supension upgrade as the v5 is a bit spongey! More tunning potential on the 1.8t

Good luck

Yip 2.0 Gti is the Golf driver for the Mk4 range, woefully gutless & only called GTi on this side of the channel.

All Mk4 suspensions- (R32 aside) just like Mk3's are wallowy old cack as standard IMHO.

If I was in the over £10k budget for a Golf 1.8T or V5 etc etc I would either put a few £k more on the budget & get a 2nd hand Seat Cupra R which are just excellent cars for the ££.

Many people have spent £10k+ on top of Golf 1.8T purchace price for power, brakes, suspension, yet the Cupra R (esp when chipped for say £400)provides 95% of that for a lot lot less ££.

For sub £10k an older non R cupra is a good Golf rival for less ££, or for even less ££ avoid the Mk4 all together & get a really nice Golf VR6.

1.8t's however still sound like washing machines unfortunatly, but VR6 = abslutely storming engine note (esp with ramair filter & miltek exhaust) will pump out a gnats co*k off 200bhp with a re-map & filter (over 200 with shrick VSR etc)& with all that & as long as you sort the suspension is a really nice little wagon, more than capable of really annoying standard R32's(*) but for £20k less & it sounds nicer too

(*) and they don't do too badly in keeping up with Maserati's who think that the de-badged Golf following them is probabaly an old 1.4 'eh Craig

Don't worry Craig I know an old VR6 is rather a long way form being Mazzer fast, I just remember coming up behind you up on that twisty road, you went round a tight bend & gave it a little bit of boot, as indeed did I, then I noticed you glance in the rear view, with a 'what the feck is that thing still doing there' expression...

That old V8 3 series bimmer of mine on the other hand, now that would indeed have been a fair germanic vs latin V8 battle.... well if I could have got the tail happy thing to go in a straight line anyway

Having owned a V5 Golf 170hp for a year, it's got a lot going for it but it had a major fault that means I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Get a 1.8T instead!!!

I found it impossible to drive the car smoothly due to the combination of sharp clutch take-up and over-sensitive throttle pedal, and I know that 'they're all like that'. I believe it's something to do with the programming of the drive-by-wire throttle.

I can't speak for auto transmission or the 150hp version but I know the 1.8T Golf is a much much smoother drive.

I've got a corrado VR6, and yes everything on my dads V5 is a lot lighter, but I just adjust the way I drive if I use it.

Hi .. hope this helps.

Over the last 2-3 years I've owned a 1.8T , 150TDI Anniversary and V5 170bhp. I owned both the 1.8T and the Anni from and both were fantastically reliable cars and performance ... mid range in the diesel was grin enducing !!

I bought the V5 when it was 18 months old and found the 2.3 170bhp engine my favourite out of the 3 I have owned to date. Fuel economy was surprisingly similar to the 1.8T but was a much more pleasing drive overall ... I think I put this down to the urgency of the V5 motor and the audible grunt under acceleration (think mine may have had a K&N filter fitted by the previous owner)

Also worth noting that I have found the majority of VW dealers very accomodating when it has come to the very few warranty claims that I have had to make ... engine fans on V5 packing in, and corroded alloy wheels on the 1.8T after 35 months ownership - all 4 were replaced with no questions asked !

Hope you find this useful

Cheers & Good Luck

the gear ratio's in the 1.8T are very long. i get about 70mph+ out of second gear before hitting the redline. good for motorway slip roads etc
