VW Drop Top Confirmed
Portugal prepares for production
At the Geneva motor show in March this year, Volkswagen aroused great interest with the unveiling of the Concept C, a combined coupe and convertible with a folding steel roof.
The standard production version, based on this design study is to be manufactured in the "Volkswagen Autoeuropa - Automóveis Lda." factory in Portugal.
The market launch of this convertible, which is positioned between the Golf and the Passat, is scheduled for the first quarter of 2006.
Discussion
Having seen this car at the Geneva Motor Show, it does look good, but a car for PH'ers? No way!
You also have to wonder how VW will position this car in the market - it is very close (folding tintop aside) in concept to the Audi Convertible. Prices will surely be higher than the French competition (Autocar indicates £20k upwards) too, and wearing a German badge no doubt a visit to the options list will be essential - soon you you will be looking at a £25k cruiser. Great for Chelsea, but not my ideal weapon of choice for the N138 to Le Mans!

The lines look good - but am I the only one who thinks it looks like a cross between an MGF & a Renault Megane Cabrio??
That said, if it was coming out this year I might have considered buying one.
(I'm thinking of looking for something more sturdy to replace my Cobra Replica, having had a 'very' close shave with a coach - almost cleared me when I spun on a roundabout.!)
