Picked up my 2000 XJR V8 on Saturday - 1 hour later it dumped fluid everywhere

Garage says it's the "o-ring seals in the gearbox"

Anyone else had this problem?

Any info much appreciated

Meantime, back to my "reliable" '92 XJS....

If it dumped a great deal of fluid it sounds like a sump pan gasket. This is a rubber item and I have seen them split on plenty of ZFs.

It could also be a torque converter seal, rear seal or transmission cooler line seal.

My advice would be to have the pan gasket changed. Have the fluid topped off and have fluorescent dye added. Have the dealer use a black light to check for leaks.

If the leak is coming from the bellhousing then have the transmission removed and the seal replaced. Parts will be under 50 quid, I don't know if Jaguar stock the part but the Mercedes dealer should.

Same goes for a rear seal and cooler line O rings.

If the car drives I'd run it carefully for a week and if it is going OK then I've saved you the price of a new transmission.

I'd get the work done at a Jag dealer. If the part is fitted by them you get a 12 months parts and labour warranty.

Thanks Gavin I am none the wiser about what exactly is wrong, other than they need more parts and it's a big job!?!

In the end, I have rejected the car and asked for my money back - I was so looking foward to owning an XJR, which makes me even more disappointed that this has happened I had big plans and a couple of trips booked and arranged for next weekend and then the end of June...

There were some initial problems with it being advertised elsewhere at a lower price as well, which didn't get things off to a good start anyway...

The garage (Main Jag dealer in Edinburgh) have done all that they could, but at the end of the day, I'm so p*ssed off at spending over £20k on a car which breaks down 1 hr after I've bought it and then still remains in Car Hospital 5 days later, that the only option for me was a complete refund.

I never thought I'd say this, as a true PH, but I'm totally sick of cars at the moment and will probably end up spending the cash on a new staircase or something before I waste any more money on another unreliable, costly, stressful heap of metal

At least I've got my '92 XJS to comfort me through it, leaks and all!

Sorry to hear about your trouble. The XJR is a truly great car. I hope you find a better example to buy soon.

The job as I've described would take the dealer about 3 hours to complete plus about GBP 150 in parts. If the issue is as you describe it, they'd be best off doing what I described to save themselves the cost of fitting a new transmission.
