Help

Just aquired a mint 2001 XKR convertable to replace a TVR Chimaera
Got it past the wife on the basis that I could fit our two year old in the back.

Well I can... but neither wife or child are very happy.

The child seat is a MaxiCosi Tobi and it is huge, so no room for little girl to get comfortable, and passenger seat fully forward.
Once child progresses to a booster seat, things should be okay until she gets too big, but in the mean time...

Questions:

1. Anyone know of a more compact 1 or 123 car seat that will provide more room?

2. Can the rear seat back be removed, leaving seat belts in place, like in a 911 to provide more room for the seat?

Thanks, Emley

There are seats approved by Jaguar for use in the back of both generations of XK, made by Britax. I *think* the Eclipse has been mentioned as being well suited to the back of the old XK, and other cars with a bucketed rear. Your local Jag dealer or specialist should have an approved accessories catalogue kicking around that may be of help.

I'm in a similar position currently trying to persuade the missus that an '07 XKR is a good choice as sensible family transport for our first one, due in June. I've seen on other forums that the Britax group 0 seat allows for someone up to 5'6" in the front - which is coincidentally exactly my wife's height. She wants to see it in the flesh though...

Best advice is to get yourself down to your nearest Mothercare World and try every combination of base/seat until you find something acceptable to everyone!

I have just been faced with the exact same dilemma having swapped my Chim for a 2004 XKR, due to arrival of a baby.

My research so far has found that none of the rear facing group 0 seats fit, well having said that the mothercare one we have would fit in the front seat if it is put fully back. The issue there is the airbag, which I am slightly confused about since the light indicating it is disabled comes on with the car seat in place but the maual says no to rear facing seats.

Group 1 seats. According to the Britax fit finder the Prince seat will fit front and back with the eclipse fitting only in the front. I have tried a Prince int he car at mothercare but we couldn't get the tension to hold on the seat belt. Personally I think it was more to do with the clip on the child seat being a bit well used/abused. I looked at the eclipse and due to the way the moldings are fromed I would not want it pressing into the leather.

I have just ordered a Kiddy infinity (link below). I tried the slightly bigger kiddy comfort pro (9mth to 12 years) and that fit in the back OK and was easy to fit. it is also a very lightweight and very safe seat. In my view a win win. I decided to order the infinity as it is a slighlty smaller seat so should fit even easier.

one seat I was also cnsidering was the mama's and papa's cybex pallas but never got around to looking at it.

You may also find that the assistants at places like mothercare view you with a certain disdain when you ask about car seats and coupes. I got the impression they thought that once you had a child you should give up on life and get an MPV!

Yup, that just about sums it up, I put it down to a lack of imagination.

Thanks for the advice everybody (especially Edward)

Gives me a good starting point for the inevitable trip to the Retail Parks this weekend.

Can't wait for the looks I will get pulling into the "Mother & Child" spot between the Zafira and Scenic

I would like to see too

I have a Britax Evolva123 which seems to fit OK, but is still a bit bulky & a pain to move between cars. I like the Kiddy seats as they fit everything & my parents might even be able to do it !

I have a coupe, so have more space than a rag top

Here are the pics (hopefully) of the kiddy infinity, the front seat is nearly all the way forward but not quite. Even managed to get one that is colour co-ordinated

Mmm. That Kiddy looks good, but still looks awfully bulky.
Is the passenger seat positioned forward.
If it is, it does not look to provide and space for little feet.

Retail parks this weekend
Britax Prince and Evolva123 on the radar so far.

the passenger seat is forward a bit but will still go a bit further, it is positioned in a compromise in the picks between leg room for the back and leg room for my wife. There is about 4" or maybe a bit more between the end of the car seat and the back rest. If you have any joy with the Britax seats please post a pic, as we also need a second seat for the other car so having 2 that would fit the jag would be a bonus.

can't comment on the conv. I (well the misses anyway) has the recaro young sport fitted in the back. not so bad when the little one is 1yo, but as they get bigger the front seat will have to move alittle further forward. highly recommend a 'No Shoes policey' in the car for anyone under the age 4 smile

I know this is a slightly old thread, but I thought I'd resurrect it to share my experiences of experimenting with an infant carrier (Group 0 baby seat) in the back of a new XK/XKR.

Knowing that this was going to be tight and potentially awkward, I chose the smallest and lightest quality baby seat I could find, and settled on the Cybex Aton. The UK stockist for this is Mamas and Papas and the ISOFIX base is only available from them at a slightly eye-watering £135. They do the seat itself for the same again, but you can save a bit by ordering this from Halfords' web site for £89.

I tried it without the base first, but this doesn't work so well. Getting it in and out is easy and can be accomplished without tilting the baby seat, plus fastening the belt is simple thanks to this being on the door-side of the seat, but it doesn't feel very stable once in, thanks to the scoop of the bucket seat. It also means the front seat won't return to a seating position, because the most protruding part of the baby seat lines up with the fattest part of the front seat.

With the base it's better. Once you get the base in place there's no faffing with seatbelts at all and, because it lifts the seat up by a couple of inches, it creates a bit more room up front. This means that the front seat can be put into a position that would be comfortable for SOME adults.

I'm 5'8" and 10 stone and it's OK for me. However, my wife who is 5'6" would only be OK there for short journeys, as she has slightly longer legs than me and tends to wear a bigger heel! You hopefully get the picture that space is marginal here.

We've agreed to keep the XKR on our shortlist on the understanding that she gets to drive when we're three-up on long journeys, until such time as the urchin graduates to a forward facing seat, which should be much easier.

Hope this helps someone. Now all I have to do is shift my RX-8 and I can become a shining example to all petrolheads worried about starting a family...

Oh, here's a rubbish iPhone picture of me in an XK sitting in front of the baby seat. A bit of shuffling found me an inch or so of extra headroom on this afterwards.

Alex, glad you could make it work in a new XK/XKR

Here are a couple of pics of our solution in an old XKR convertible.

Plummed for the Britax Prince.
It is pressed tight into the leather, with an anti-slip/protective mat between, and is as rigid as you could get without ISOfix.
It is tight, but I have improved the positioning since the picture was taken.
Putting the seat into the first recline position renders her much less upright than is shown in picture.
A strict no shoes policy in force
She is quite happy, has a great view as her seat is more central, she has much more room in front of her than the first picture would suggest.
She now complains that the roof does not fold down in the Mercedes and Focus

Passenger seat nearly fully forward, so not too good for passengers taller than 5'6".
Seat base positioned fully low to maximise clearance from roofline, provides a reasonable compromise.
I have also experimented with a booster seat.
Once daughter is old enough for that, we should have a sweet period where she is really happy

Hope this helps, it can be done

Any updates? Can you get a child weighing 15kg (2 years old) in the back of a 2007+ XKR with space in the front for a passenger?

I have a 2001MY XK8 convertible and this is going to be an issue for me all too soon!

A few comments. The 1996-2006 XK8 convertible and coupe have quite different rear seats. The convertible has a much smaller space in the back than the coupe, with the rear of the back seat in the convertible having a much more vertical inclination. You therefore need to check recommendations as to whether they are for the Coupe or Convertible. I'll report back when I've finished doing all my digging but happy to receive up to date recommendations of any currently available baby seats and child seats.

Can the rear seats of the 2010 XKR 5.0 be classed as 'integral child-sized seats'?

It just doesn't work, sorry.
If you need a third or fourth seat, buy a coupe.

I let the XKR Convertible go.
It felt like child cruelty, and the wife wasn't any happier.

A mighty fine car, but to be honest the XKR was not really me.
A nicely crafted GT yes, but not really any nicer than my Mercedes daily drive.
And that fits the whole family, dog, kitchen sink and maintains a good pace.
My toy needs to be a sports car.

Until a nice 993 coupe comes along, I am making do with an MR2 Roadster.
And I have more fun with 134bhp, on every trip without the family, than I had in 18 months of XKR ownership.

Best of luck

Emley
