They're all good cars. Buy one. They are British.
They will keep UK folks in jobs ...

On the other hand, I'm no style expert, but on
the basis of a whole day with an X-type and another
day with a S-type, I'd say both of them had interiors
which seem to have been designed by Mr S. Wonder
of 1960s music fame. In my opinion.

Engines good, suspensions very good, boot space
a bit limited (why no hatchback for more space?),
gearbox good, road holding good but oh dear
those interiors. Exterior styling I can just
about live with.

At least both the X-type and the S-type have
better fuel consumption than the XJ8, possibly due to
a smaller number of cylinders.

Has anyone found the X-type or S-type to their taste ?

I have run a S-type since Jan 2000 I like the styling but agree the interior isn't special. I recently did the factory tour in castle bromwich and the new model s-type is much better, the centre console is now similar to the XJ and the seats are better, switchgear tidyied up, car lighter, etc

Overall it has done nothing wrong, but then it isn't particluarly exciting either, I prefer the XJ but then they dont do them with a manual gearbox! Not that keen on the X-type feels a bit too cheap

Funny how Jags are always panned for having 'unergonomic' switchgear. I have a 1993 BMW 730iV8. The switch for the sunroof is - above my head, rather than on the centre console. The switches for the electric windows are - yep - on the centre console, rather than on the doors.

I once had a 1990 4.0 Sovereign, and it was superb. I like a traditional English interior with leather and walnut. I don't want carbon fibre or milled aluminium in my everyday car; I have a TVR for that. The Jag was gorgeous (though sold in fear of servicing bills). I would dearly like an XJ8, but clients can be funny about these things. They don't seem to be so bothered by BMWs.

I'm happy with the science in the Jaguar
cars, it's just some of the non-science (ie
aeshetic) that causes me eye pain.

Your mileage may vary, but I've just had a 40K
service on my XJ8. It was cheaper than some services
I've had on an MX5.

My advice to you is that if you want an XJ8, go
get one, and keep UK workers in work. BMWs, while
good cars, tend to be driven by apprentice Volvo
drivers and mainstream middle managers.

the yearly or 15,000km service on my XKR costs £166- and so far no extra bills on top of that , i think that is ridiculous low serviceing for this type of car

Fantastic, isn't it ? XKR for Ford Mondeo money.

I expect servicing bills to go up as
the car gets older, but less than 400 quid at 40K
miles is a result in my book.

There's probably a cambelt change at 60K or so
that wil be expensive, but I'm not worrying
about that yet.

If I were allowed to use all the performance
on an XKR (ie top speed) I'd have one tomorrow ;->

Hi DCB

i am told that from around 80,000km there can be some high cost items to be replaced i guess belts-chains disks ,but it is quite ridiculous to be able to service a car like this for Ford money
