Hi Guys, just bought an X-type Estate (55 plate). The luggage cover roller had been pulled off its mount (inside the compartment) and was fully extended and not retracting. This was basically really annoying me, if you had/have the same problem maybe my solution may help? I tried for ages to get the roller to sit back in place but then realised that you need to get tension back in the system for this solution to work. So basically you have to take the unit apart:

1. Un-clip the roller mechanism and get it indoors, put something interesting on the tv, get a beer and be patient.
2. Pull the release buttons straight up and off.
3. The unit has been put together with some nuts with a Jag only allen key, I may be wrong on this but I could find no tool to undo them. Even if you can turn them they spin freely and this achieves nothing, and I couldn't find a way to hold the opposite side steady. So I just simply took a blade to them, trimmed the plastic around them and pulled the plastic over the bolts to remove one end of the roller. This is botched job but it got one end off.
4. Once the end is off slide the cover out and roll the cover up, wind quite a bit of tension into the system before siding the end cover back on, you have to pinch the cover and hold the loose end on to stop it spinning out of control. Use some glue to hold the end back on or just clip straight back into the car.

I am sure their are more expensive ways of repairing this but this was quite rewarding in the end.

If this explanation is not helping PM me and I'll try and do a better job. I appreciate photos would have helped too!

Hi Rus

All these years later I followed your instructions. Needed patience and an extra pair of hands that I didn't have!!
After winding the spring the wrong way I managed to reassemble and now sits proudly in the car. I drilled out the rivets and found my old pot rivet gun and spare rivets. Used these to repair it like new . Must be nearly 50 years old! wonder if they still make them.

The original problem was caused by a rivet falling out underneath the stop end that held the spring tensioner. Replaced that as well with the pot rivet gun.

Hope that this helps other X-type owners.

Thanks for your help

This makes me happy!
Reading my instructions back now they make limited sense, but I remember how long I messed about trying to repair this.
I am happy it has helped you!
