Does anybody know...

What the difference is between buying a registration through a broker such as newreg, and via the DVLA directly.

I have found the same registration £160 cheaper from the DVLA, and am curious of the reason for the extra charges from NewReg.

Their administrative cost of buying the plate directly from DVLA before you do, plus their profit of course.

DAZ.

Exactly, they don't do it for free they have to cover operating costs, salaries and make a profit too. It's the same for anything you buy from shops or stores, they buy from a wholsaler and sell to the public. Same with Reg plates.

So why wouldn't I just go straight to the DVLA and cut out the middleman.

the difference with the shops is that the wholesaler wont sell to the public...the DVLA will

You can there's nothing to stop you

The thing is not every has the time to go to a DVLA auction and bid on a cherished plate or even know that the DVLA sell other less desirable plates direct, they may not have internet access but see the plate advertised in the paper. Also not all the plates are held by the DVLA some are held on retention by a plate seller, as mine was when I bought it 6 years ago.

Buy from the DVLA and it includes the transfer fees, etc. Take paperwork to nearest VLO, with valid MOT for your car and old tax disk. Exchange tax disk for new one and handover the paperwork - V5, etc.

You can now legally put new number on car - new V5 will arrive in the post from the DVLA.

It's that simple. You can also buy a number for another person and hand it to them as a present - there is a box to fill in on the Retention Certificate that you have to complete as the purchaser.

Don't buy from a dealer unless the plate has already been issued by the DVLA to someone else.
