I replaced the steering pump on my X type diesel at the weekend. It took 3 hours with no problems. Any advice needed by DIY'ers? I'll be pleased to help.

I assume you changed it due to the squeak at the base of the column. It is a known problem and jaguar make an additive to cure it.Time, around 30 seconds.
If it was changed for another reason, its` worth buying the addititve .

It had a serious fluid leak that was getting worse, it was also getting noisey.

What's the additive and where will I get it from?

Hello there.

I would be interested to know some more about the steering pump change. I have heard contrasting information that it bolts onto the water pump and that it doesn't, and that it may be the case that there is one of about 6 that it could be, although main dealer Jaguar insist it is one pump for the entire age range. I would like this clarified as I do not really want to use a main dealer as I have managed to locate a pump for £95.

I am thinking it is connected to the water pump by 3 bolts? Did yours split quite easily?

Cheers,

John

Hello. I have a power steering fluid leak. Jag specialist suggested I need to change the PAS pump and also water pump estimating £600. I am going to do I myself with help from my neighbor mechanic. Can you help me with the following queries please?
1. Leak is around the PAS pump. Do I need to change the water pump also?
2. do I need to change the power steering fluid reservoir also?
3. Besides a new PAS pump, what accessories do I need, I.e. O rings, seals, any other?
4. If I am changing the PAS pump, is it recommended to replace belts or any other item?

Many thanks,

Drain the fluid into a suitable container.
9. CAUTIONS:
Whenever the power steering high-pressure pipe union is disconnected the power steering pump port and pipe should be plugged to prevent dirt ingress. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.

Do not disconnect the quick release connector on the high-pressure pipe as it will not disconnect. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the vehicle.

Remove the power steering high-pressure pipe union from the power steering pump boss

Many thanks for your detailed information on how to replace the PAS pump.

i presume your dad's xtype was a diesel? Mine is diesel 2005 2.0.

Did you have to replace to the water pump also? My mechanic said that we need to replace the water pump as it is connected to the PAS pump. But I have a feeling that that might not be the case. You help on this will be of great value.

Kind regards,

Yes his car was a diesel, and yes I did change the water pump at the same time not because it was attached to the pas pump but because it was leaking

Cheers Mark

Power Steering Pump problems perhaps coming from to high internal oil pressure

I have the same problem and while I'm waiting for the new Power Steering Pump ordered by Melling UK at ebay my thinking is around "Why could this happen to my car having only 87000km MY 2004?"

I have a brand hot idea today, on Sunday.

The leak pump-seal is not broken from Power Steering Pump-pressure, it is perhaps broken from continuing higher internal oil pressure that comes from the servooiltank that has inside the cover a 1mm whole to equalize pressure from oil getting hot and cold to the outside.
If a liquid get hotter the volume get greater too - inside pressure builds up. At my X-Type I had long time the problem that the servooiltank-cover-o-ring lost oil to the outside, while oil level was ok. I solved the problem with a more thickly o-ring.

But the months before the Power Steering Pump died, the problem was back.

I hardly believe, the real reason for the leaky Power Steering Pump seal at the X-Type is a not working pressurization at the Servooiltank, exact the hole for ventilation inside the cover has only 1mm and blowing with the mouth give a feeling of "this bullst can't do this job well".

The solution is, I drilled the whole from 1mm to 2mm - that's not so much, but blowing with the mouth into the hole gives a much better feeling that this will work much better.

You should be care with dirt and clean well the cover before using it at the servooiltank to avoid damages resulting from drilling the PVC and smaller pieces from that.

Good luck, st happens

"mission accomplished"

One glas Red for the detailed help, one for Thomas at Melling UK for the fast delivery

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&i...

and the rest for the work that was done.

I think the critical point is the HIGHPRESSURECONNECTION that should only be opened with a SW 22mm tool and only the o-ring should be replaced, not the HP-Connection.

I have leakage from what seems to be the point where the high pressure hose connects to the pump. I also have considerable play at the point where the pipe meets the first nut: here is a picture:

Should I replace the entire hose or is the play normal perhaps I should only replace the o-ring?

Thanks for the advice!

X TYPE DIESEL - REPLACING A POWER STEERING PUMP-

My garage is struggling to source power steering high-pressure pipe for my 2005 xtype jag. Any suggestions as Jaguar have no date for restocking.
