I'm considering picking up one of the above.
Hoping to find an '06 or later with reasonable mileage for no more than £15k.
Does this sound realistic?

Does anyone have any thoughts on points to look out for?
When are the main service intervals etc?

Services at 15k/12 months I believe, big cambelt change at 105,000 miles and the shorter fuel pump belt at 150,000 miles. Drive one first and try a petrol XJ6 and compare fuel economy over your route before deciding if you can live with the diesel compromise. It's a good wafter but the engine is about as involving as a hand mixer. Throttle lag from standstill can be appaling. Impressively refined for a diesel but even the relatively rough V6 petrol puts it to shame, let alone the V8s.

Also - they seem to go for quite a bit more like that, £15k might be too ambitious for a good one but I haven't really looked around for 6 months. You could get a £10,000 - £12,000 XJ8 and go a VERY LONG WAY on the extra £3000 to spend on fuel. As with all diesels you need to work out your mileage and payback time before bothering. Also I'd expect them to be more expensive to maintain over the long run due to the complexity of the engine and the usual diesel issues.

You won't get many miles per gallon, only becuase you'll constantly want to feel the huuuge woosh the powerplant produces. thumbup

My missus is getting rid of hers soon. While I was never sold on the looks of the XJ, it is a nice car to drive. In fact I drive it a lot more these days than she does since she got a company car. 45 mpg on a journey and you ll be well over the NSL without noticing it. Its a good mid range car, surprisingly nimble for a big diesel barge, but as said before it can be a bit hesitant on take off. Its an issue on the 2.7, more so in the Land Rovers. If it was mine I would have got it remapped, but other than that I cant really complain.
I think 20"s are a must, though tyres can be expensive. Servicing at 15k wont break the bank. I cant say the car ever let us down, it went into limp mode once, some issue with a sensor on the exhaust, which was covered under warranty.

Jaguar + Diesel = Market forces, sadly.

If petrol was a sensible price (wihout tax off it's about 35p/litre I think) then diesels wouldn't be necessary.

Petrol duty is a voluntary tax.
LPG is half the price, essentially the same fuel, and you get a smug feeling filling up for 25 quid and not paying most of your cash in tax. My son had the car off me and doesn't know why he didn't cotton on earlier. Xj would be a natural.
I ran my Pajero on used cooking oil for a year, two of us bought a convertor.
But now, for some reason, I bought an xj tdvi, '06 black executive model with 20,000 and full service history for 15,500 Inc warranty.
I think it was the 20" sepangs that I went for, an impulse buy I suppose, but 40 mpg regularly, big presence and the old saying...... Grace, pace, space. Love it!

All xf have folding seats. But post 2011 facelift they made the release handles an option! These can easily and cheaply be retrofitted though.
