I have an x-type 2.5l sport it handles beautifully but I'm finding the road noise in the cabin is awful compared to my previous BMW 323. Has one else got the same issue and is there a cure (different tyres??).

Only for interest,

what wheels and tire dimension you have got?

And what colour is your Cat.

You can see, I am quite interested in the X-Type myself.

I noticed the very same thing when I went from a 323 with 16" wheels, to a 328 sport with 17" wheels and much lower profile rubber.

Turn the stereo up! The larger wheels always look nicer Incidently, has anyone driven the new diesel x-type yet?

Thanks for the responses! It's a black cat (is there any other colour) with 17" low profile Pirelli P Zero's and yes the 323 had 16" and looked like everyone elses. I think I'll just have to drown out the noise of the road with purr of the engine!! (I'm not impressed with the stereo either - any thoughts other buy an Astra!!)

I went out for the first time yesterday in a friends X-type, it’s a very nice car but I was surprised at the level of road noise in the back, seemed to but more than my old 1980’s 320i.

He’s been quoted £500 to supply and fit a CD changer at the main dealer, does this sound about right?

£500 for a CD multi changer is about right with main dealer rates, would be worth trying a specialist.
There is a fair amount of road noise but it is AWD and does have firm suspension even in SE mode. It is worth checking tyre pressures as I have found they can make quite a difference in my 3.0L SE

I'm also using an ipod, via a cassette until someone comes up with a way to wire it into the stereo. Even with the cassette adapter the sound is fine, I wouldn't waste money on a cd changer.

Has anyone tried or heard of any successful alternative tyres to reduce the road noise?

When I was given a 2.5L regular spec auto loaner when my X was in for service, I noticed a difference in road noise from it to my X 3.0L Sport manual. I just thought that the 2.5 (being a loaner car from the dealer) had been "driven hard" by various and assorted numpties and that is what made it louder...

- and there is another colour "British Racing Green" (the true one, not the slightly metallic JRG)

I have an x type 2.5 sport same problems with road noise coming up through the boot / floor pan. Now the car has been fitted with `Dynamat` sound deadening. This is available from specalist car Hifi dealers and has been applied to the boot floor (dynamat extream), the floor under the rear seat and rear seat back (Dynamat extreamliner).

Now much quiter.
