Hi guys this is my first post to Pistonheads having been a regular reader for the past 12 months. This post is in relation to the steering on my fathers Jaguar X Type 2L. Whilst urban/city driving the car darts and dives accross the road at an alarming and at times dangerous rate. You really have to keep a firm hold of the wheel to try and correct your line. The best way to describe the feeling at the steering wheel is that of a Playstation force feedback controller going mad! We have been to our local dealer twice so far. Firstly the tecnician drove the car and agreed that something was wrong. They moved the front wheels to the back and rebalanced them. This however made no difference. A few days later we returned the car as there was a visiting Jaguar engineer from the factory. This time they told as that they'ed reset the suspension settings (Haven't a clue what this involved) and implied that the settings must have been incorrectly set at the factory. Anyway this has not cured the problem.

The car in question was purchased new by us around 6 months ago and we have so far covered around 6000 miles. We have a suspicion that the car needs a new steering rack but the dealer has yet to come to that conclusion.

Have any of you guys had or heard of similar problems? Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated.

Matt

Oh, and we had to call Jaguar Assist out on Saturday as the boot wouldn't shut, therefore we couldn't lock the car. The guy that turned up made it so that the boot was permanently locked. That's due to be fixed at the dealer tomorrow.

If there is another dealer locally, I'd suggest you speak to them... always good to get a second opinion.

Have you checked the alignment and balancing of the wheels... not to mention the tyre pressures... are the tyres assymetrical? (if so, are they rolling the correct way?).

Hi Podie, all that you mention have been checked. Your idea of visiting another dealer is a possibility though.

Might be worth a go... be interesting to see if they give a different opinion... might be even more interesting if they are not from the same group.

Dropped car off at dealers last night and the girl on reception mentioned that they'd ordered a new rack so it will be interesting to see what it's like when we pick it up tonight.

Our local Jaguar dealer replaced the steering rack (under warranty) at the weekend and this seems to have sorted the problem. They also replaced the faulty boot locking mechanism.
