Hello there!

I own a 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa, and I'm looking to change it and buy a Jaguar XJR, (due to an expanding family)!

A while ago I had a test drive in an XJR-6 and thought it was fantastic, and have been wanting an XJR ever since.

I think its the ultimate Q car!

I was just wondering if any of you were thinking of changing your XJR for a smaller sports car with an open roof and would be interested in my Porsche with a cash adjustment as required? If we did a swap this way we could both avoid taking a big financial hit selling a car to a dealer.

My 911 is red in colour, and has a black leather interior, electric windows and an in dash C.D. player. It's done 115,000 and has a full sevice history and receipts file. It is a completely standard U.K. car, except for some lovely 17" Porsche cup alloys that look superb! It is worth about £12500.

By the way, I wasn't sure of whether I was allowed to make such a post on the forums, but I asked Petrol Ted and he said it would be O.K. for me to post as there is no classified section for swaps yet.

If your interested, please mail me.

Thanks,

Philip.

Philip,

You should get a really excellent XJR6 for £8k-£9k from a dealer with history & warranty. There's one on eBay at the moment at a starting bid of £5k ( Driver banned) & another low mileage example (33k miles)with a starting bid of £9k.

With a £12.5K 'budget' you should be looking to get an good early XJRV8 - I've seen them as low as £10k in the classifieds.

Good luck

Toby,

Porviding that I do get my asking price for the Porsche, then the big decision I will have is which XJR version to go for. It would be tempting to get the V8 XJR purely for the extra power it has, but I am worried about reliability, and I think that it may be better to get a mint 6 cylinder XJR and have a bit of cash left over set aside for maintenance. Besides I think the engine bay in the 6 cylinder car looks awesome!

As a question to you or anybody else who is browsing this thread, If you wanted to buy an XJR with a £12.5K budget, which version would you go for and why?

Cheers,

Philip.

I asked the same question recently Phillip.
My choice would be the V8.
Have a look at my "I want an xjr" thread - some excellent advice.
Mike.

I've read that post, and I've got to admit I'm warming to the idea of the V8 due to it's performance. However, I actually prefer the interior styling, and engine bay detailing in the XJR-6!
I guess it's a question of what comes up!

Philip.

For that sort of money you'd be looking at an early XJR-V8 with a few miles on it and a nikasil contender, so you must get the engine history checked (better if its had a replacement put in).

If you road test an XJR6, make sure to switch the traction control off and put the gearbox into Sport mode to sample the very best that the straight 6 can offer.

slightly off topic.

When I road tested my XJR V8 I asked about the traction control button (when not activated it's lit red, opposite to most things) and the sales rep said "Oh I wouldn't turn that off, this is a powerful car" to which I pointed at my Cerbera and he smiled back.

Needless to say the TC was off.
