Someone suggested to me an X Type Sport as my next car, although that's a long way off (December) is it a good idea?

I'd be looking to spend £8-9k on the car, will any be available come December at that sort of price.

What is the X Type like to drive? What are the running costs of one like?

This may be a crazy idea but I've always liked the X Type and having got a few quotes I could easily insure it, even though I am only 20.

As you probably know, the X-Type is based on the Ford Mondeo, giving it a solid starting platform.

I don't know to much about it, a lot of it is from Motoring Magazine and driver reviews, but I do know that you won't be disappointed in the engine. The Jaguar 3.0 Litre V6 is superb. Very torquey and sounds great!

Other than that, the X-Type is apparently a bit of a Ford parts bin special inside. Not that that is necessarly a bad thing. I have heard that it does suffer from drive-train shunt through the 4WD system as well.

The general verdict seems that it's not to everyones taste, so you just have to test drive it, throughly, and see if you like it. If you do then buy it.

I would imagine you would be looking at 12/14k for one by the end of the year, unless you come across one with a very high mileage or one that has had a very hard life....

However, if you can find a nice one at that price go for it, but get an insurance quote first at your age.....

Running a few quotes through elephant by December it will easily be insurable, although I'm finding lots of other cars will be too, such as the Elise, RS4, Impreza, all manner of things really. I know it's a fair way off but the quotes were very low, around £1k for the X Type.

Hi, first post on the forums, but regular reader!

I have had a 2.5 Sport for 16 months now (from new)and clocked up over 42K miles in that time.

Love - the handling, steering feel, the engine note, customer service from dealers.

Could do better - Interior, brakes, standard kit, lack of mid range torque from 2.5!

Dislike - Transmission shunt from front, occasionally balky gearbox

Overall - a good sports saloon with great handling and traction (4WD!) but which needs the 'grunt' of the 3 litre to truly exploit it!!

Cheers
Nick

FWD, You called?

Sorry - takes a while for the shout to reach up to the Esprit forum...

I test drove the X-type 2.5 auto, 2.5 manual, 3.0 auto and 3.0 manual before purchasing mine.

Get the 3.0 manual if you can. The car is more responsive and you can manage the (somewhat wide) torque band easier. If you can find one with the Sport package (easily recognised by the colour-coded grill and lack of other shiny bits), then so much the better. You will get better seats, some fun electronic toys usually, nicer wheels, and a better suspension setup.

Other than one little niggle (documented earlier on this forum), my little X has been trouble free. It is without a doubt the best daily driver for one who drives an Esprit on the weekends

Going to look at a 3.0 sport on Saturday. "51" plate, 36k miles, panther black metallic with black leather, every conceivable extra, 18" alloys, electric pack, computer gizmo etc, £15k

I've looked around and it seems a good price. What says you ? Anything in particular i should be looking out for ?

It will be a second car to my Noble so i'm used to Fords
