I need someone to bang me head with something heavy and solid.

I am thinking of getting rid of the XJ8 sport for an earlier XJR.

The XJ8 is faultless. But it needs more uumph.

If this is a bad idea please let me know, as I am more than happy to keep it, heaven knows I have whittered on about an XJR for long enough.

What sort of XJR Would I get for the XJ8, and what is it worth?

I know I am getting a bit boring now, and sorry for that, but I do not want to go down the M3 route, which is always a nag in the back of my mind.

Changing a V8 for a 6 cylinder?

Take a deep breath and repeat these words.

"I love my car I think it's great,
All I need is my V8"

But if you find a XJR V8, well that's a different matter

Straight 6 versus V8, don't want to open that old chestnut up again. Only answer, get one of each!

Mike I guess the decision you're faced with is: Do I chop in the XJ8 for a good, late, medium mileage XJR-6 or add some serious cash and go for an early, high mileage XJR-V8? It's a difficult one that. I'd start by test driving an example of each variant, weigh up factors like depreciation, servicing and parts costs, service history ... and then choose the XJR-6!

It's noticeable that good early X300s, and XJRs in particular, are moving through the dealers like hot cakes. At the asking prices of £8-9000 for M, N, or P regs and XJR-V8s starting at £15,000 that's no surpise, they do represent a lot of motor for the money.

You're absolutely right Pete, It would be chopped in for as you say, medium mileage XJR-6. I don't particularly want to spend much more.

But then again, if it goes wrong then it drops me in the mire completely. Seeing as I still have a decent warranty with mine then I would be a bit daft.

Test drive time I think, this will settle my curiosity!

Mmmm, I've only been offered £7,500 for mine in part/ex and that's a 97 XJR v8. I'd have thought mine was only worth about £10,000 in a private sale - unless of course they're starting to go up in value?

People have told me the 6 seems faster than the v8 (XJR), but I prefer the little extras like better interior, wheels, 5 speed auto, active suspension, side airbags and stuff - all IMHO of course.

I can see a good XJR-6 being around £8-9,000 as they're regarded as collectors cars more so than the v8 - I think

If you were going from a 4.0 V8 X308 to a 4.0 X300 S/C Manual I might see your point.

In general though the V8 is a far better car all round to drive, quieter, better brakes, more refinement, nicer dash, just better in every respect. New front suspension makes a massive difference.

I'd get a 4.0 V8 S/C X308 as the next upgrade rather than go for the 95 to 98 MY car.

If you don't want to go for that just consider a spring / damper / anti roll bar upgrade (then suspension will be as the XJR except for the rear A frame bushes) and put 18" wheels and tyres on it.

Thank you Gavin.
Isn't my suspension similar to the XJR anyway? (Sport variety of x308)
The suspension is marvellous on mine, and it corners very well.
I note your comments about the improved bits and bobs though.
Appreciate your views, thanks.
Mike.

Yes it is similar but the spring rates are different, anti-roll bar diameters different and damper tuning is different.

A frame Bushes look the same - but are different. The W shaped bracket (Monostrut) may well have different rates on the XJR.

Aside from that everything suspension wise is identical, as is the differential, halfshafts, as should brake hardware (but I am not sure about pads).

Is there any remapping, tweaking or fettling that can be done to your car to improve performance on your existing car?

Perhaps Arden can help?

Looks like you've made up your mind Mike if the PH frontpage and the classifieds are anything to go by.

What is the decision?

Not sure yet fourwheel.
The Jag is great, but doesn't have enough poke for me really.
If it doesnt go then I won't be too worried, but I may move it on in the fullness of time.
I do fancy a supercharger though.

Have you sold it, or did you change your mind? Notice it's no longer in the classifieds.

Not old fashioned enough I'd say, you clearly don't remember the SS Jaguar 1 1/2

Not quite old enough to remmember maybee, but The Jaguar name first appeared in 1935 on the SS100 which had an inline 6. The you mention 11/2 was an SS before the Jaguar name was adopted, so my statement still stands, unless of course you know better
