Does anyone know where I can get a drivers handbook for a 1998 XJ8 Sovereign. I have been to all local Jag dealers in my area of Surrey and all say 'no stock and discontinued item' Please help as there are a few (quite a few) things on the car which I can't figure out yet and a handbook should hold most of the answers.
Hi Mike, thanks for the iinfo. Loooked on ebay but could not find the item. My main enquiries concern how to use the cruise control as I do not seem to be able to 'engage' it and also how to use the trip computer. This sometimes shows me fuel used or range, but no matter in what order I press the buttons, I cannot make it do what I want it to. Is there a special order of button pushes to make it work? Thanks again
Hello Ruby,
I have photocopied the cruise control and computer bits, if you email your address, I will send them to you.
In precis, the cruise control is......
"The system is operated by an on/off master switch mounted on the gear selector surround, and 4 control buttons mounted on the steering wheel, these are:
'set+' set speed or decelerate (top left button)
'-' decelerate (bottom left)
'resume' resume set speed "button marked res"
'cancel' cancels without erasing memory speed (middle left)...
SETTING SPEED.
1. push on/off switch, a red warning light on the switch will indicate system on.
2. accelerate as normal, until correct speed is reached.
3. press the 'set+' button briefly and the vehicle speed will then be stored in the memory and system engaged.
The driver can then release the accelerator, and the set road speed will be maintained.
Note...
Braking will cancel the cruise control function, restoring accelerator control to driver.

Second bit....
TRIP COMPUTER...
"OOO" Sets the selected trip to zero.
A/B Toggles between either A Computer, or B computer
M/K Selects metric or imperial
"Clear" This can be used to cycle through TRIP - ODO - MESAGES.
RESETTING TRIP COMPUTER.
At the start of the journey, or series of journeys to be recorded, reset the computer memory to zero as follows.
1. Press the trip function button to select a computer function. The computer will display either A or B trip data
2. Press the A/B switch to select the trip (A or B) to be reset.
3. Press the ODO switch and hold for 3 seconds.
The display will read.................A:TRIP RESET
or B:TRIP RESET
Then it will reset and display A:0.0
or B:0.0
Note, only A or B will be displayed.
The selecting Metric or Imperial just needs the M/K to be prodded, obviously M for metric and K for imperial (k???)
NOTE.
1. The range and instantaneous fuel usage data ia independent from trip computer, and cannot be reset. The data is common to both trip memories, and cannot be prefixed by either A or B on the display.
2. The trip mmory cannot be reset to zero if either 'range' or 'instantaneous fuel usage is displayed.
INSTRUMENT CONTROLS.
These are controlled by pressing the end of the left hand stalk.
By pressing this, you can tab between
1. Trip distance
2. Range
3. Fuel used
4. instantaneous fuel usage (that bit scares me)
5. Average speed.
To sum up.
When I reset the trip, say after refuelling I press 'A'
Then 'OOO' For over 3 seconds
It will read 'trip reset'
And then 'o.o'
Which indicates all clear.
To chop and change, prod the end of the left hand stalk.
I think that is about everything.
If you need any more help dont hesitate to ask, and I have the hard copies ready to send you if you like.
Best wishes.
Mike.
