Hi. I recently bought a '99 XJR (and I'm having a lot of fun with it!!) However, I have a query regarding insurance. My insurance company tell me that an XJR of this age doesn't have a Thatcham approved security system fitted as standard, and they won't cover me for theft until I get one. Can anyone confirm/deny this please? If it's true, then I'll be off to get a new system fitted ASAP. Thanks for any info.

Cheers,
James.

Your local dealer should be able to tell you...

...must admit I'd be surprised if a car of that value / desireability didn't have a thatcham alarm... but that's an opinion, not fact.

Yeah, that's what I thought too! Just found the info on the Thatcham site: www.thatcham.org/resources/pdfs/compliance.pdf and it says that all XJ8 97 onwards are compliant. Obviously muppets at the insurance company. Cheers, James.

Thatcham 1 approved security system. With more additional bells and whistles than most including an anti-tilt alarm to deter unauthorised towing or jacking. Perimeter sensing, battery tampering and intrusion detection.

Edited to add, took too long finding my Security System manual out and typing the info in

Turns out that they were looking at X-type, and obviously only had listings for '01 onwards. There was no explicit listing for XJR, so I pointed out to them that it was unlikely to have a lesser security system than a standard XJ8. Sorted, and now covered for theft (phew!). Thanks all.

Tell the muppets to call Jaguar themselves. If they don't, then take your business elsewhere.

Why should you need to 'prove' what is standard spec? They should know this already - that's their job. Otherwise, what on earth do they base their premiums on?
