Well there I was queing up in the McDrive-through in the X-type to by some McFood for the McFamily when a hear a strange wining McNoise coming from the car. Quick glance at the dash area - no McIdiot lights lit up.
As I am almost at my McHouse, the two red lights indicating an extreme heating McProblem come on. Get out of the car and subtle smell of McFries and McCoolant...
After thinking "This is not what I ordered", I thought I would ask if anyone else has had this problem? What is the problem? (2003 X-type 3.0 sport - manual)

PS: The silver lining I guess is the I can drive the McLotus to work more while it is getting sorted

Loss of water coolant can mean a few things.
1) Water leak -> look for discoloured water marks (anti-freeze) check jubilee clips, connections.
2) Holed radiator -> if not visible compression test would show this. (USA equivilant to RAC ? or mechanic)
3) Water is going elsewhere -> Head gasket possibly gone, don't drive the car.

A little water, but not much. My thought was possibly water pump related (with the strange whine). She is still under warranty (less than 12 months and less than 7000 on the clock) so I shall insist on flatbed, loaner car and suitable ass-kissing from the main dealer
Thanks FWD. I shall keep all and sundry aware of what they find out. I guess I was looking for similar things from new X-type owners where I could gauge as to whether or not this was a fault. I guess it's a feature on mine <-because I have to so I don't loose my temper...

They were the stages I went through when my XJR suffered a loss of water.
Don't know about the limp mode, but the bloody fans stayed on for about 1/2 an hour after I shut it down. The "danger" lights came on about 1/8 of a mile from my house, so no major worries...
...By the way Denny, I got a ride in a Mondeo Diesel in Scotland. Turns out a mate of mine up there has one. Actually quite a nice vehicle

Just having people respond to this is perking up my mood a bit. Still loooovvvvveeeee the car as a daily driver. It just irks me that this has happened.

That was my thinking as well. Oh, well - thier problem not mine. We actually have a good Jaguar dealer here. So good that I have actually bought 2 Jaguars off of them. They give X-types out as loaners during warranty work, so at least I will be able to thrash around one of thiers for a while
(Just wish it was an S-Type R - I really need to twist my wife's arm a bit harder to upgrade. You know, just for the extra luxury and all )

Edited to add: I would have said XJR above FWD, but my wife likes the S-type's "styling". Women, eh?

Now I've got the rant* out the way - The X-type does have a 'limp mode' in the event of any sensor returning a major fault, so the risk of any damage (beyond the initial fault) should be minimal

WOW!!! Coincidence?
My colleague here at work (2002 2.5 Sport) comes in Monday morning, face like a wet weekend. His X-Type had overheated on the way into work with coolant pissing out from the front of the engine bay.
Phoned the local dealer who sent a guy out with a replacement bottom hose and a new set of hose clips. Ten minutes later he was all set. Problem solved.
Couple of points:
1) The engineer told my colleague that the hose clips as fitted at the factory on the bottom hose have had a tendency to fail prematurely. Hence the new (and better) hose clips.
2) The problem caused by 1) can potentially damage the bottom hose so a replacement may or may not be required.
3) Funny the dealer knew EXACTLY what the problem was?
4) Jag seem to do really well on JD Power and so forth. Could a lack of recalls for problems such as these be mitigated by a "fix on fail" approach?
I hope this is useful to you and you get the car back on the road real soon. Do let me know what the problem is/was.

The hoses letting go is, according to my dealer, a common problem. However, this doesn't result in noise, just water everywhere
Since Nov. '02 build date they've put in upgraded hoses and clips and (in the case of my excellent dealer*) they're retro-fitting them to any car that has any coolant issue however minor.
Pump problems are 'very rare' apparently, but would explain your symptoms
*not the bunch of f#wits who currently have the car...

Just as an update...
My local dealer (Collier in Orlando) has fixed the problem...
timeline:
Friday:
11:00 - Flat bed arrives, picks up car
11:40 - Car arrives at dealer
2:00 - Dealer calls "It's all ready to go and we've done the oil change service for you as well"
3:00 - I call them back to let them know I can't pick it up until Monday...
fk me, that was fast. I don't know what the issue was , but I will certainly post it here after Monday. I have never has a dealer work that fast on anything in the past. Kudos to them

Right...
Just got back from the dealer. Stuck thermostat (in the closed - ie:no water flow) position and the radiator hose sprung it's clip. Apparently a pressure buildup forced the clip off and the only reason I didn't see a puddle is because the thermostat stuck...
The good people at Collier also noticed one of my demisting vents coming loose so they ordered a new set for me - Quote - "Might as well. It's under warranty so it doesn't cost either of us anything". On top of it all, they completely valet-ed the car (including wax and interior rub down with the Jaguar approved leather treatment). I consider my arse truly kissed
