XJ-R v XJ6 or 8?
Discussion
Sorry if this has been done to death in the past, but I have a quick question:
I am opting out of the co car scheme in April and the sensible option (for me) is to get an XJ6 Sport or an XJ8, question is, I have lusted after an 'R' for ages.
So, does anyone have a rough idea of how big the difference in running costs / insurance is between the standard XJ saloons and the 'R'. I have run XJs before and, apart from maybe bigger tyres and brake disks, I wouldn't have thought the running costs would be massively different, but I may be wrong

Hi
i dont know about the J`s but i ran an XKR for a couple of totally trouble free years , servicing is cheap as chips about £180- for the once a year or 15,000- km i guess as they get older thisgs will need fixing like disks and the like but i would not think the cost will be very different from the R to the J
Go for it you know you need the extra 77

Don't know about running costs, as the wife shot down my suggestion of an XJR (available from as little as 5K!) but Auto express had an article a few months ago, that showed you could run an normal XJ (second hand, can't remember how old) over three years for the same cost as a brand new astra
This was down to the huge depreciation of the astra. I think total costs for 3 years was 12-13K (dep, fuel, service, insurance, everything)
If I can find the article I will post more details

An XJ-R8 is tempting but I don't think I would get a decent one below £14k ish, whereas I can get a bloody good XJ-R6 for under £10k.
So, It would be a late R6 or a sporty looking early XJ8.
I tend to think that the only significant difference will be on insurance?

I have a 96 XJR6, as the previous post it eats tyres, if you opt for the soft PZERO's look at ~ £700 per 10,000 miles, servicing for the R or the J is the same. I bought the R for the supercharger, the extra power is noticeable but in my case rarely used. I might flick the sports switch for overtaking in country lanes now and again. Cruising at 90 is under 3000 revs.
