XJ8 Proving too expensive to run,
and the dog doesn't like the leather seats.

Only 19 mpg, £700 a time services, and it's got
more power than I'm allowed to use in the UK.

Test drove a BMW 530i SE today.
Rubbish, but cheap to run.

Inside like a video cassette box, and I'll have to
get the indicators removed for the full BMW effect.

Sorry, lads & lasses, but the accountant in me
has won out.

Interestingly, fewer BHP, but 12 mph faster.
152 mph instead of 140 mph.

No point buying anything too powerful or luxurious
in Blair's Britain.

They've have me in a Ford or Fiat in a few years.

Oh well. Times are hard.

With no brake disc changes or anything it was a breakdown as :-

Service Kit XJ8
Castrol Oil
Screenwash Fluid
WD-40 spray
Brake Cleaner
Drain Plug

Oh....just forgot that cost also inlcuded the £106.80 MOT check.

Hope that makes you sleep better. No major things needed.

Can do. Basic service usually runs to about 400
to 450 quid, at a Jag main dealer.

However, everytime I took it in, there's *always*
something broken & needs repairing.

It is an English car, after all. Not brilliant build
quality.

Hence the 700 quid.

Can't say I've had a service bill over £1,000.

We are talking main dealer prices here.

BTW, had the BMW 530i for five days now.
Impressed - much better acceleration,
better fuel consumption, easier to park,
firmer suspension, better seats, better windscreen
wipers, better rear seats.

Yes, but U appear to be in Sweden, Silverback
Mike's in Bristol & I'm in SE England.

Dealer prices can vary.

And let's not forget the big cost of Jaguar ownership
- depreciation.

Jags aren't mainstream cars so dealers have to
make much more money on each one to make a living.

I'd be lucky to get only 25% per year depreciation.
It costs much more to travel first class.

At the age and milage of Mikes car, surely he would be better of with a good indipendant Jaguar specialist.
There must be at least several in the Bristol area.

Thanks for the replies folks,
DCB - I agree, the BMW's are good at everything, and yours is a 530 - excellent car, as are most BMW'S.
But for me, mine (1998 523ISE) just lacked something.....sounds daft but I have always wanted a Jaguar, so this one was fantastically cheap for what it is. The bad depreciation was felt by someone else.
It has been valued at a lot more than I obtained it for, so you never know, I might not lose when I come to sell, not that that is the plan, but might jump to an XJR eventually. But you will have to go far to beat a 530....Maybe a 540 or m5...
V12 Bob, I agree with you also, a good independent specialist is the way ahead. Do you know any near Bristol or the south west. (Service still a long way off though = so no rush).

Managed to get 4.1 MPG When engaging sport mode earlier
But must add, only for a short time.
God I love this car.

Do not ever look at the mpg computer on any Jag or BMW when accelerating!

Better to just fill up when you need to.

As far as mpg is concerned - ignorance is bliss.
