X Type Estate
What next - a Jaguar SUV?
Jaguar today issues the first pictures of the stylish new X-TYPE Estate, which will make its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show on 9 September 2003.
bla bla, agile riving dynamics .... sporty yet comfortable... attributes fit for a king... nice seats ... lots of space for a dog... enough space for a huge chunk of cheese... integral roof rails, rear screen that opens.
It's got permanent four wheel drive, a choice of powerful V6 petrol engines and that 2.0 diesel.
Further details of the new X-TYPE Estate, which will be on sale in spring 2004, will be released coincident with its public debut in early September.

With regards to the Ford / PAG / Jag issue, I have a couple of things to raise...
1) How come BMW are "allowed" to produce estates, diesels, 4x4's and are still "ultimate driving machines". Sounds like double standards to me.
2) The company is in business to (try and) make money. Given tax regs (the X-type is aimed at the company sector) people are buying diesels and estates - why should Jag leave Merc and BMW to it?

its easy to take the piss out of a brand trying to breach new market segments but i think its a pretty stylish effort (even if it does look like a volvo V40).
A jag diesel may sound like sacralidge to us here in blighty but in the rest of europe diesels are out selling petrols and so jag can't afford to miss out on this market.
think of it this way - if the diesels and estates mean that Jag continues to survive and produce cars like the XKR then thats a bloody good enough reason for me!!
besides BMW are screwing up the formula that has served them so well for years - they're surely forgeting their brand values more than Jag is?!?

I sold my XJ8 last October in exchange for a Mercedes C250TD estate.
The reasons, no space to carry anything and fuel costs.
Its a step in the right direct but perhaps a little late.
Also a 2lt diesel is painfully underpowered. Needs something between a 2.5 & 3.0lt TD
Look forward to seeing whats next.

IMHO it looks quite decent if you want a dog carrier.
And previous estates were interesting; granted it was Lynx converting an XJS (and Aston doing those shooting brakes) showing that performance estates can be a hoot and lookers to boot.
OK we know that underneath its a mundano estate with 4 wheel drive - but would you be seen dead in a mundano estate . Not a looker in anyones eyes, that one.

You have obviously never owned a Rover 75, my father had one and although on the surface they look OK (for older people) the quality of the interior and driving experience is pretty poor. Having driven both cars extensively there is no comparison both in driving and quality. The Rover 75 (except the MG ZT) handles like an old dog, try going around a corner in one. Reliability was also a problem bits kept going wrong or falling off!
No I haven't owned a 75, but I know people who have and none would agree with you.
I've driven a 75, a ZT and an X-type, quality of the 1st two was way beyond that of the X-type. Materials in the X-type are an insult to the Jaguar name. Driving wise the comfort of the 75 and sportiness of the ZT can't be approached by the X-type.

Well, seeing as I have to drive an 3.0 S-type every week as the pool car to meetings 'Up north' then why do I own a Rover 75?
Because the quality of the 75 is far, far, far superior to anything Jag have except the XJ and above.
What else do you expect from two re-warmed Ford platforms?
At least the 75 is an all new car and what more you'll find it's won more plaudits and awards. Nothing's fell off my car, nothing's gone wrong, the S-type has got 60,000 on the clock and it's been in the garage three times.

Personally I wouldnt buy a S-type, Rover 75 or X-type, our X-type is my wifes car as she likes the look of it, but it does look good which certainly cant be said for the ugly 75 or S-type!! I am waiting for the new XJ to filter onto the used market and buy one next year, now thats a good car! Never driven an S-type but having driven the 75 many times its absolutely awful to drive, The engines are not bad but the gear change and clutch along with the handling is very poor! My father who had it as a company car, hated it and on my experience with it I have agree with him. The ZT, although I have never driven it, I am sure is a better drive, but normal 75's should be avoided, another bad car from Rover I am afraid. I even tried to confirm this with the JD power survey but the Rover isnt even listed due to lack of vehicles sold.......what does that tell you?
And as for not having a clue my choice of cars include a Boxster S (my last car, best in class) TVR S2 (great summer car) A Mini Cooper (my wifes last car again best in class) Previous car Mercedes E-class (again one of the best in class) and I have an Aston Martin AMV8 on order.......
