Hi all,

I'm going to look at an 1997 xjr this weekend 100000 miles fsh, but no invoices, just dealer stamps.
I know what the main issues are, re nikasil, cam tensioners tb's etc, but are there any of you out there that have an XJR from this era still running original engines with no problems?

Many thanks

I have a XKR, but he same applies.

A dealer should be able to check if there has been an engine change regarding the nikasil, and possibly cam tensioners.

There is not a problem new with nikasil as all petrol now is a lot better.
You could ask for a 'Blowby check' to put your mind at rest.

The Jaguar V8 is a strong engine so good for high mileage.

Two things (I am an XJR V8 owner): (i) if there is a full JAG history the dealer (or dealers) can print off the invoices/worksheets for the servicing etc from their screen. That will tell you what has been done to it in the shop over 10 yrs. My 2000 XJR had a FMDSH but the previous owner had used his invoices for tax deductions and they were not available. The car had been serviced by two main dealers and I got this information. Ask nicely (say you are the new owner). If it has been serviced by indies then this is not so easy or necessarily possible (or, to some people, as reliable). (ii) if you can see no problems in the history/invoices since 97 then perhaps you could buy without a blow by test as the problems (if any) ought to have materialised by now. If not, get a blow by done. You are probably paying, what, £7k for this car? You do not want your first service to be several thousand pounds. The tensioners on your ought to have been replaced by now - check if they have been.
