please could anyone advise me what is the most common cause of knocking type noise comming from n/s rear area, whilst in the car it sounds like its in the boot but its not, i dont know alot about cars but a friend had it on his ramp but couldnt find anything obvious?? i had new rear shocks not long ago but?? is there any bushes that are prone?? thanks in advance spencer
The A frame bushes are the most likely cause, but it is usually due to them failing and allowing metal to metal contact between the rear A fram and the floor pan. Not always easy to see if you do not know what to look for. Essentially, there should be clearance btween the A fram and the floor all aroun it. These bushes are about 3" in diameter. equally there should be clearance between the A frame and the licating bracket under it. Depending on your abilities, toolkit and workshop, it is possible to replace them at home, or at least to remove the A frame and take it to your local Jag specialist. If one os to be changed, change both and only for genuine Metalastic replacement units.
The second most likely culprit is the rear shocks. The lower mounting bush can fail, but it should have been replaced with the shocker. It is always possible that the top has been assembled incorrectly or not tightened properly. We are talking about a distinct 'knock'. If it is more like a rubbing or squeking sound, then it is the shock top mount. They should be greased prior to re-assembly.
The last place to look is the U/J's that form part of the drive shafts. If the clonk is when drive is taken up, one or more may have wear in them. Hope this gives you a clue!
