Jaguar tweaks the S-Type

Supercharged car gets big price drop

New Jaguar S-Type
New Jaguar S-Type
Jaguar's come up with a late-life kicker for the S-Type in advance of its replacement in 2008 (see related story link below).

The 2008 S-Type revealed yesterday at the Bologna Motor Show includes a number of tweaks and new prices -- some up, some down -- although the supercharged R gets the biggest price drop.

Motive power remains unchanged, the S sporting three engines, from the twin-turbo V6 Jaguar diesel engine through to the 4.2-litre supercharged V8, mated to either manual or automatic boxes.

Jaguar is grafting the S-Type R's bumper and mesh grille onto the standard model, along with upgraded alloy wheels: a multi-spoke 17-inch Antares wheel is now standard on the least expensive models, while all SE versions now feature the 18-inch Triton alloy wheel.

The Limited Edition XS model has also replaced the existing S-Type Sport model with an exterior styling pack, Sport interior and 18-inch Mercury wheels. At the top-of-the-range, the S-Type R now comes with 19-inch wheels as standard.

Interior tweaks to entry-level models include multi-function seats with non-perforated leather, the six-speed automatic transmission, leather seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel as standard, while a new mahogany veneer is available as an option across the range (excluding XS). Also optional are ivory and charcoal leather colour combinations for SE models. Rear Park Assist is now standard on all models.

Model changes in detail

The range is simplied down to four trim levels: the Spirit, XS, SE and ‘R’.

S-Type Spirit (2.7 diesel and 3.0 petrol) – The new entry to the range will be the 2.7 diesel and 3.0 petrol Spirit models. These cars feature 8x6 way leather seats and automatic transmission as standard, in addition to the other changes being made to the whole range. Prices fall by £1,000, with diesel prices starting at under £30,000 and petrol prices below £29,000.

S-Type XS (2.7 diesel and 3.0 petrol) – The XS model replaces the existing S-Type Sport. The 3.0 petrol XS is based upon the 08MY 3.0 Spirit and includes automatic transmission, SE steering wheel and reverse park control as standard. Additional standard features include 18-inch alloys, an exterior styling pack displaying a new front spoiler with fog lamps, perforated leather sports seats, sports interior theme, de-chromed bumpers and sports suspension. With an auto box as standard, it costs £31,995.

S-Type SE (2.7 diesel and 3.0 petrol) – this one gets 18-inch alloys, 10x8 leather seats and rain sensing wipers, as well as the new bumper and grille. Pricing at £33,495 (3.0 litre) and £34,495 (2.7 diesel) is £455 more than the prior model year.

S-Type R (4.2 litre supercharged V8) – The car gets new 19-inch alloys and a drop in price to £45,000 from £50,040.

Models dropped include the 2.7 diesel Classic and 3.0 petrol Classic models, 2.7 diesel S and 3.0 petrol S models, 2.7 diesel and 3.0 petrol Sport derivatives and all naturally aspirated 4.2 V8 engine derivatives.

Oh hell - I'm due to replace my 2.5 X type in 2008/2009. So do I get a sale-price end-of-line S-type or do I get one of the new XF sports coupe and seal my midlife crisis? Damn you Jaguar!

Lovely thought it is, your decision is a simple one really : XF. It's the future, not the past. You S-Type will look even more dated when the XF comes out. Financially the S-Type looks good but you'll want the XF.

£5k off the 'R, wow!

They are fab cars and I would love to have one, but the writing is on the wall, by all means by a last edition, but wait for 6 months after the launch of the XF, there will still be new ones around, see the out going XKR!

Really excited about the XF...............

I hate to say this but I don't understand how on earth anyone can buy an S-Type. I was thinking the same thing when they launched it god knows how many years ago. Each to their own I guess but the "retro-styling" is so tacky, the car almost looks objectively fugly. Just my opinion though.
