Can anyone help me please?
I am considering buying an XKR.
I have a budget of about £25k and want a post 2001 car with NAV, and 20" rims.

Just a couple of questions please?

1) What is the fuel economy like on the XKR? How many miles per gallon (I never believe manufacturers specs). I am guessing about £65 to fill the tank and just over 300 mile range. Does this sound about right? what sort of range does everyone typically get?

2) With the new XK being introduced last year, how has this affected prices and woiuld I loose a lot of cash in depreciation over the next year (I never keep a car more than a year).

3) Is the timing chain problem still an issue with the post 2001 cars with the later engines?

Many thanks in advance,
thumbup
Lee.

Your budget should get a good '01. Would you want a Coupe or the ragtop?

1) You should get 300-350 from a tank and it costs about £60 to fill it with Optimax. My mpg is about 22 around town and 25/26 on a run.

2) I would expect to lose at least 5k over the next year. Depends on whether you're paying dealer money in the first place.

3) Not so much, read this and of course check out this.

Oh, and join the XKEC.

It would be coupe.

I am tempted by this one:
www.pistonheads.com/sales/108893.htm

Is it overpriced?

Cheers,
Lee.

Looks nice, I don't think it's overpriced (assuming you can haggle a bit).

4.0ltr 5 speed = Avg. 20-25mpg. 4.2ltr 6 speed = 25-30mpg. The extra grear saves a lot of fuel on the m/way. Range dependant on driving style but you are not far off with 300miles per fill up.

2) With the new XK being introduced last year, how has this affected prices and woiuld I loose a lot of cash in depreciation over the next year (I never keep a car more than a year).

XK's lose around £300-£400/mnth. Always have always will.

2001- '51 plate cars will be aye-ok.

£25k will get you a very nice car and the ideal time to do a bit of haggling this time of year, for one of these cars. Can I suggest, you go for XK 400 (limited edition car with ALL the right kit) with the newer 4.2ltr 6 speed.

My advice would be to get it checked out by a dealer.

I know a couple of people that bought XKR's recently, and at the first service ended up with LARGE bills for work that needed doing... in one case it came to nearly 8k...

With the earlier cars you have to be aware of the 'big 3': Nikasil, Tensioners and Water pump. These may require a dealer to check out.

If you're looking at one that's after 2001 then these are much less of an issue. You just need to be sure that:

The engine runs smoothly (with no rattles).
That there's no water in the oil.
That it has a full service history.
The tyres have even wear and plenty of life left.
The disc & pads have some life left.
That it drives & brakes straight and true.
That all of the electics work.

Thanks for the replies so far - much appreciated - all good advice thumbup

A couple of you have said I could loose as much as £5k in the first year (£300 - £400 per month)!!! If that is the case, as much as I love the XK, I can't afford to loose this much money in a year

I might go for the Porsche 911 instead. I know its not as nice to drive, but the lower running costs and better depreciation make it more affordable.

Cheers,
Lee.

L33, if you think you will be better off with a 996 you will be very much mistaken! The reason these £60k cars - 996/XK are affordable in the first place is because they lose money, just like any other car!

Buy it cause you want it...............

Good luck.

I agree, both depreciate and have already shed their values vastly but the Porsche depreciates slower. £25k buys an 2002 XKR or a 1998 996.

I stand to loose about £2k on the 911 over a year, which makes it more affordable.

Its a shame as I prefer the XKR - Its nicer better to drive.

Which is why you should buy one and never sell it! Depreciation problem solved!

Compare like with like! A 1998 XKR will be about £10k, a 2002 996 will be £35k!!!!! You may only lose £2k on depreciation on such an old 996, but the bills to run such an old car will soon tot up!

The XKR 400 was launched in October 2003 and is thus a 2004 MY car - and only 100 were built. It's therefore currently well beyond a £25,000 budget - either that or I paid way too much for mine!

133, may I ask why you're so set on changing your cars at least once a year? If it were for a better model of the same car I'd understand, but it appears that's not why you do it.

I never said you could get it for £25k, but that the 4.2ltr 6 speed would be worth the extra outlay. If you bought it from a JAg dealer you probably did pay too much! hehe

Not to sure about that Ive had 3 cars from jaguar dealers, included in the price is £800.00 to £1,000.00 worth of warranty depending on what model you buy , and as long as your dealers NOT located in Stock broker land, they are open to a deal,Big overheads and they just love the warranty work because Mr JagFord is paying for it the dealer will do anything to keep you happy, real customer service and far superior to BMW stealers

£10K for a 98 XKR !! For a rough one possibly. Even if you look at trade values an XKR Coupe is going for around £12K with people looking for up to £15K. I Paid £18K on E-bay for a 98 XKR Conv two years ago, it has cost about £1000 in repairs and servicing and I would expect to get about £15K if selling. Join the XKEC well worth the money.

£25K for an XK100 is an OK price, less than dealer much more than trade. Depending on how good it actually is on viewing determines what you should actually pay. Remember if you only have £25K it only buys you an early 996 and from brief visits to the Porsche forums they are not any cheaper to run than XKRs
