Hi Folks

As a new guy on the block looking for help on a problem which has been troubling an Aussie friend who has an XJ6.

He experiences petrol fume smells in the saloon after start up and it continues throughout the journey. Apparently they have to drive with windows down or it becomes over powering. He lives in Queensland, so the weather there is generally hot. We are visiting in December (even hotter) and hoping that someone out there has either fixed or knows how to fix this problem.

Sorry details a bit sketchy.

I suspect that at some point in time the fuel tank was over filled and in the Australian heat the fuel expanded and had no where else to go but into the evaporative emissions system. The charcoal canister is probably now full of fuel and needs to be replaced.

This is a fairly common thing to happen on older U.S. cars in the hot South, newer cars have check valves so it doesn't happen as frequently as it used to. Most newer Jaguars have the canister located by the rear axle so if it does happen you don't get it coming in through the climate control system.

This is the best long distance, second hand, diagnosis I can offer, hope it's accurate and it helps....
