XJR Buying - Any advice?
Discussion
If the car has an MOT then everything works so then you need to worry about parts which go wrong.
The important areas are all related to the engine - timing chains, water pump and cylinder condition.
You must get these checked, and the deal breaker is cylinder condition. The owner should have evidence that the engine has been leakdown tested regularly - on cars that have done short journeys the bore coating (Nikasil) is known to erode off, requiring the engine be renewed. A lot of Jags have had this fixed under warranty.
If the engine runs OK I would bargain for money to fix the timing chains because they are another weak spot, but relatively easily fixed.
When you get the car change all the lubricants, especially the transmission, they will make the car last longer.
Aside from that the cars are very straightforward, and actually extremely reliable.
