It's just that Autocar RT figures are surprisingly close considering the extra 100bhp the R has, ie. 0-60 in 6 v 5.2 and 0-100 in 15.4 v 12.6.

I've got an S-Type 4.2SE and it's great! (admittedly I've not driven the R to compare though). It's very comfortable, very well equipped and 300bhp makes it seriously quick - overtaking is effortless and I don't know how the figures compare but, subjectively, it feels quicker than my old Boxster S through the gears (if not round the corners ). You can pick them up fairly cheaply (mine is up for sale if you're interested!) and I'm not sure just how much more you'd get for the extra you would have to pay for the 'R' - although it has another 100bhp the figures aren't so different.

Hi had mine 18 months ,normally time for a change ,but cant think of anything much better for the price with 4 doors.Seem much faster than the 4.2 considering at 100mph 3secs is quite a big gap!.Whether its worth the extra is up to you, advise you drive 1 i dont think you would be dissapointed, cheers Lee.

If you buy the 4.2 every time you see an R you will be kicking yourself.

If you have to ask then you should not be on PH yes

Hi - what extra goodies do I get for the SE? - Do you know of anyone who can mod exhaust to provide a little character to percolate into cab? - Any inexpensive mods - eg remap / chip? - How low do you think I could get a private sub 70k 4.2 example in late winter?

Did you compare it with an X 3 litre SE equivalent?

I've found a 2003 S-type R with less than 6k on the clock for a smidge over £17k - its basically brand new cosmetically at least. Its an auto (and in the US as am I - hence price which I suspect is cheaper than UK) but low mileage always makes me suspicious. Are there any horror stories of lemons out there? DOes anyone have any experience of the auto box. Looks fab, I must say - I wasn't even looking for one and it is just above my budget (but isn't that always the way?). Extremely tempted...

No longer a nightmare for me ... "traded" her in last night. Depreciation was just silly. Got peanuts.

Bought a BMW E92 335D. So much better than my old S-Type I still can't quite believe it.

Through their cynical ignoring of a repeat customer with a valid and proven fault, Jaguar have lost me FOR LIFE. I will leave theLurch website online as this has helped inform people of what to look for and what not to get fobbed off with.

Wish all you Jaguar drivers many miles of happy motoring,

D.
