If an L-reg XJ6 has got twin headlights, but otherwise looks like the older XJ40 is it an XJ40 or an X300?

Sorry think I've sussed it now, the shape of the bonnet gives it away I think!

Dunno, perhaps one of the 'old knacker' specialists can help you out?

L-plate deffo XJ40 as I'm sure you've realised. They did some with twin h/lamps (look better IMHO). X300 was 95MY so earliest N reg.

Earliest customer X300s were November 94 so therefore M reg, like mine

Looks like an X300 is definatley worth seeking out over an XJ40, Still seems like theres quite a price jump from the last of the XJ40's to the first of the X300's

Personally, I think the later XJ40 are a bit of a steal. The last were made in 1994, by which time the majority of problems were ironed out. And they have all the extras too. It's finding a low mileage, rust free one that's the tricky bit

Yep most seem to have been to the moon and/or or have a general aura of tattiness about them. I'd be afraid of something like that purely because of the cost of sorting out all those little niggly trims etc. Would also prefer a manual paperbag

yes I'm keeping half an eye open for a last-of-the-line 6.0 V12 LWB, preferbly a Daimler model. Ofcourse, the missus may be a little upset if another Jag turns up on the drive, but she's married me now, so she'll just have to put up with it. hehe

Exactly. Besides, I like to keep a little defence up my sleeve... like the time she persuaded me not to do the sensible thing by buying an X300 XJR, and convinced me that the X308 XJR really was worth the extra money. I'm not sure she factored an £8.5k replacement engine after 12 months into the equation. scratchchin

So in reality I can justify any car purchase now, just by threatening to pull out the above argument.

Ahhh, wedded bliss

Had rust in bulkhead of xj40 bought from Jag dealer with warranty and numerous other problems(suspension, heater matrix, brakes, exhaust manifold, electric seat etc). Sold it on day warranty expired and gearbox linkage failed going to trade in. Had x300 since, Quality car. Very few problems. Now ten years old (have owned for eight) and AC just failed. Cost £300 to repair. No other big bills and maintain myself.

Was thinking about a punt on something like this but on second thoughts will probably leave it another 6 months or so after I've rationalised my fleet and go for an X300. How many cars does one man need at the same time after all hehe

Unfortunately with old Jags you seem to either have a really good one or a really rough one - never middle of the road.

I had an absolutely stunning XJ40 4.0 Sovereign which I truly wish I'd never got rid of. Here's a pic before I put an immaculte set of lattice sports on to finish it off.

cloud9

Edited to add that I bought the car when it was 11 years old (one owner from new, full dealer history). The above photo was when it was about 13 years old and it was still mint despite being my daily driver.

Yes, I'd go along with last-of-the-line XJ40's being the least risky gamble if you can find a decent one.

After years of BMW's and dreaming/lusting about Jag ownership I finally took the plunge this year.

In April I bought an X300 model Daimler Double Six and it's been superb so far-properly screwed together and looks great-goes great too with the big, lusty 6 litre V12. Even does 20mpg on long runs!

I'd read all the horror stories about buying old Jags and, after reading that Ford had pumped much cash into improving Jag reliability, chose the X300 as I'd heard good things about it and this has been backed up in spades by the ownership experience.
