Hi, just bought an XJ8. Lovely car, makes every trip a special occasion. Doesn't sound quite as glorious as my late and lamentable Alfa 166 3-litre though, abet it is rather more hushed...

I have a few questions that some more knowledgeable owners might be able to help me with.

The previous owner retained the Owner's Handbook, so I'm still feeling my way around the car's gadgets.

1, What sort of phones are compatible with the car's built in system? I have a std Nokia brick (6230), and it obviously doesn't fit the connector under the armrest.

2, What does the 'Valet' button do?

3, How can I re-set the driver's memory position? All the current settings are for individuals of Mini Me or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's stature!

Many thanks for those who might be kind enough to reply.

Hello! wavey

1) Motorola phones were fitted as standard and they only work on Vodafone or O2 networks. What reg is your car? Mine is an 'R' and it used the Motorola 8700. I beieve at 'S' reg it changed over to the Motorola Startac phone. Note that there are standard Motorola handsets which only parly work with all the car gizmos, then there are the 'Jaguar' versions (identifiable by the Jaguar logo on the startup screen) which are the correct handsets and are fully functional with allt he in-car controls.

I happen to have a Jaguar Motorola Startac with charger if you need it, for a fair price ofcourse.

2) Valet button has always been a bit of a mystery to me. The idea is that when you arrive at a hotel and the car park attendant gets in to park your car, you press the valet key. What this is supposed to do is a little questionable. Some people say it stops the boot from opening - in which case, great, but how does the owner then get into it? Others say it limits the power so the car park attendant can't go for a high-speed spin - again, great, but how does the owner ovveride it?

Let me know when you find out. hehe

3) To reset the memory position you need to position the seat to where you want it, then press memory and then press and hold one of the number buttons until it chimes. Note that depending on the spec of your car, the steering column and wing mirrors will also be 'remembered'.

I hope that helps.

Valet mode: Get to the restaraunt or hotel, push the valet button and hand the parking attendant the GREEN key. This disables the boot (and glove box on certain models). It doesn't limit the speed or anything along those lines (that i've ever been told). To disengage valet mode you need just open your car using the remote and start it using the black normal key.

You could get one programmed, it'll cost you dearly though.

Thanks for your help guys.

Groomi, could you email me how much you want for the Startac. I assume it will take a standard Vodafone/O2 sim?
